Enter the \u201cpenis snake,\u201d a similarly manhood-shaped invader that\u2019s causing a hubbub in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery little is known about these animals in the wild,\u201d Florida herpetologist Coleman Sheehy told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cltampa.com\/news-views\/florida-news\/article\/21154436\/florida-now-has-an-invasive-penis-snake-problem\">Creative Loafing<\/a> of the member-evoking creature, which first surfaced in the state two years ago. Authorities had captured a 2-foot-long specimen at the C-4 Canal, near Miami International Airport, and put it in captivity, where it unfortunately died of starvation. <\/p>\n<p>Its remains were subsequently sent to the Florida Museum of Natural History, where DNA analysis identified the penile critter as a caecilian, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.froglife.org\/tag\/caecillian\/\">a type of virtually blind, legless<\/a> amphibian that resides in the jungles of South America and Asia. This particular species, which is endemic to Venezuela and Colombia, had never been observed in the US before, Creative Loafing reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not on my radar,\u201d exclaimed Sheehy. \u201cI didn\u2019t think we\u2019d one day find a caecilian in Florida. So, this was a huge surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"\u201cVery little is known about these animals in the wild,&quot; Florida herpetologist Coleman Sheehy said.\" class=\"wp-image-18976198 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/caecilian-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/caecilian-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/caecilian-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/caecilian-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/caecilian-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>\u201cVery little is known about these animals in the wild,\u201d Florida herpetologist Coleman Sheehy said.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Austin Prechtel<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Colloquially known as a \u201cpenis snake\u201d due to its phallic countenance, this noodle-shaped creature hunts by using a pair of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/amphibians\/facts\/caecilians#:~:text=In%20some%20species%2C%20the%20eyes,possibly%20help%20the%20animals%20navigate.\">face tentacles<\/a> to detect snails, lizards and other prey.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, despite growing up to 5 feet long, this creature doesn\u2019t pose a threat to humans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing particularly dangerous about them, and they don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to be serious predators,\u201d said Sheehy, adding that they\u2019ll \u201cprobably eat small animals and get eaten by larger ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, researchers are concerned that the critters are here to stay as multiple caecilians have been found in the same body of water since 2019. Currently, they\u2019re trying to figure out \u201cwhether caecilians are established in the C-4 Canal,\u201d said Sheehy.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists aren\u2019t sure how the South American migrant got there in the first place, although they suspect they might\u2019ve been released by careless owners as that species is the most common in the pet trade.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Florida has become ground zero for invasive species, which include everything from iguanas to Burmese pythons.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
