“#NYC’s likely next comptroller flip flops on BDS stance after Ben and Jerry’s Israel boycott<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

New York City\u2019s likely new comptroller has made his first big flip flop, courtesy of Ben and Jerry\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Brad Lander, a City Councilman poised to become comptroller after winning last month\u2019s Democratic primary, was once a staunch supporter of Israel who has now declared his app<\/a>roval for the ice cream company\u2019s controversial decision to stop selling in the West Bank.<\/p>\n

In response to Ben and Jerry\u2019s announcement, Lander tweeted this week that<\/a> \u201cending Israel\u2019s military occupation is a moral imperative,\u201d adding he disagreed with moves by the state comptroller\u2019s office to restrict investments in Ben and Jerry\u2019s parent company Unilever over the issue.<\/p>\n

The Brooklyn Democrat said he was \u201ca Jewish New Yorker who cares about the wellbeing of both Israelis and Palestinians,\u201d but the leftward pivot is a significant departure from Lander\u2019s days in the City Council, when he co-sponsored a May 2016 resolution<\/a> \u201ccondemning all efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and the global movement to boycott, divest from, and sanction the people of Israel.\u201d That same year he attended<\/a> the annual Celebrate Israel Parade. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs a proud, active, progressive Jew, I feel deeply invested in Israel,\u201d he said in a statement<\/a> about the 2016 resolution, adding he cared \u201ca great deal about Israel\u2019s right to exist as a Jewish, democratic state, a haven for Jews in times of trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2015, anti-Israel partisans<\/a> attacked Lander for going on an Israel junket paid for by the city\u2019s Jewish Community Relations Council. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf he wants to be an ambassador or a foreign policy person he should run for president. In the meantime he should stick to his own business,\u201d New York Democratic campaign consultant Hank Sheinkopf said of Lander.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
