Aretha Franklin may have passed away back in 2018, but her spirit lives on through Jennifer Hudson. The Oscar-winning actress sat down with \u201cCBS Sunday Morning<\/a>\u201d to speak about her role as the legendary singer in her biopic, \u201cRespect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hudson, 39, discussed with interviewer Kelefa Sanneh her friendship with the Queen of Soul, the process of embodying the late music icon and how she believed that Hudson would win the Oscar for the role.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe very first thing Aretha said to me when we sat down was, \u2018You\u2019re going to win an Oscar for playing me, right?\u2019\u201d Hudson said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what to say.\u201d\u00a0The \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d winner previously won the Oscar for her role as Effie in 2006\u2019s musical, \u201cDreamgirls.\u201d<\/p>\n

She then added that Franklin was so impressed with her portrayal of Effie that she handpicked her to play her in a future biopic. Hudson and the \u201cRespect\u201d crooner stayed in touch eight years later and spoke weekly up until Franklin\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Sanneh and Hudson were able to visit Muscle Shoals, Alabama,\u00a0together, where they went to see\u00a0Fame Recording Studios<\/a> for the first time. \u00a0The musically sacred ground\u00a0is a place where\u00a0many fans believe Franklin learned to use her incredible voice that led her to become a legend.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can feel, like, the magic I feel like that\u2019s taken place,\u201d Hudson explained about the studios. \u201cLook, and Aretha over here. Okay, hold on. Oh my God. Okay.\u201d \u00a0

\u201cRespect\u201d deals with much of the joy and pain Franklin experienced in her long life. Hudson revealed she drew on her own tragedies to help tell Franklin\u2019s story.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2008, the \u201cSex and the City: The Movie\u201d actress\u2019 mother, Darnell Donnerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson, were found shot to death inside their Chicago home. Her older sister Julia\u2019s son Julian was reported missing after the crime and was found dead three days later. Julia\u2019s estranged husband, William Balfour, was charged with the murders.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no way I would have been able to deliver this or tell this in such an honest, vulnerable way to those depths without my own life experience to channel it from,\u201d Hudson continued.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the film released a clip of Hudson as the soulful singer performing at Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n

\u201cRespect\u201d hits theaters on August 13 and also stars the talents of Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald and Mary J. Blige<\/p>\n
