Rick Astley fans \u2014 and haters \u2014 are never gonna give up watching his hit song on YouTube<\/a>, which just surpassed 1 billion views.<\/p>\n

The official video<\/a> for \u201cNever Gonna Give You Up,\u201d which was released 34 years ago this week, now has over 1 billion views on YouTube.<\/p>\n

The song became significantly more popular \u2014 and memed \u2014 with the rise of \u201cRickrolling,\u201d an internet prank in which people are fooled into clicking on a hyperlink that leads to the music video. The video even picked up an extra 2.3 million views on this year\u2019s April Fool\u2019s Day alone.<\/p>\n

The viral sensation\u2019s journey to 1 billion views began even before the official video was posted to YouTube. In 2007, 4chan users helped give a head start to the \u201cRickrolling\u201d trend, so much so that Astley performed at the 2008 Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Astley also won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Act Ever in 2008 for the song after a widespread internet voting effort.<\/p>\n

The video was posted in 2009, and by then he had already become popular \u2014 once again \u2014 on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201c1 BILLION views for Never Gonna Give You Up on YouTube ! Amazing, crazy, wonderful!\u201d he tweeted<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The official YouTube Twitter account replied<\/a>, \u201can iconic moment for a YouTube icon\u2026 congrats, Rick!!\u201d<\/p>\n

When released, the song reached No. 1 in the UK for five weeks, as well as No. 1 in 24 other countries. Astley wasn\u2019t originally thrilled with the reemergence of the song, but his daughter kept him optimistic by noting that the song made him a long-lasting household name after the song peaked in 1988.<\/p>\n

While 1 billion views is a huge feat on YouTube, a few other songs have him beat \u2014 by a lot. \u201cGangnam Style,\u201d which reached 1 billion views back in 2012, now has 4.13 billion. Leading the pack is \u201cBaby Shark\u201d with a whopping 9 billion views.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever Gonna Give You Up\u201d is the fourth music video from the 1980s to reach the achievement, behind Guns N\u2019 Roses\u2019 \u201cSweet Child O\u2019 Mine,\u201d a-ha\u2019s \u201cTake on Me\u201d and Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cBillie Jean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Astley is commemorating the achievement with the release of a new \u201cNever Gonna Give You Up\u201d limited-edition signed, numbered and colored 7-inch vinyl single.<\/p>\n
