“#Kehinde Wiley Designs New MTV Moon Person Trophy<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

American artist Kehinde Wiley<\/a> has designed a new version of the iconic MTV Moon Person Trophy, as Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> points out. The updated statuette was created as part of MTV\u2019s 40th anniversary celebration. Wiley\u2019s Moon Person is adorned with flowers and green vines, and \u201crepresents inclusivity and diversity marked by the historical, environmental and nature relevance of the botanicals,\u201d as MTV told RS<\/em>. Winners will receive the updated trophy at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards.<\/p>\n

Of the new Moon Person design, MTV added:<\/p>\n

Each intertwined vine or leaf has a different historical relevance, such as the seeds from African slaves, that are woven into the American tapestry. The sculpture complements Wiley\u2019s forthcoming series<\/a> of portraits, in which he plans to create paintings featuring his subjects lying on their sides as vines encircle their bodies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In 2018, Wiley unveiled his presidential portrait of Barack Obama. Obama chose Wiley to create the painting, which now hangs in the Smithsonian\u2019s National Portrait Gallery<\/a>. Wiley\u2019s paintings are world-renowned, and have included<\/a> renderings of the Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Ice T, and more.<\/p>\n

The 2021 MTV VMAs are scheduled for on September 12 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The show will take place in front of a live audience.<\/p>\n
