“#Schumer predicts infrastructure vote ‘in a matter of days’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\u200bSenate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer predicted that a vote on the proposed $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package could come \u201cin a matter of days,\u201d as lawmakers continued to tweak the plan during a rare Sunday session.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u200bSchumer (D-NY), speaking on the Senate floor, said the text was \u201cbeing finalized imminently\u201d and that the Senate could soon begin voting on amendments, with a final vote on the bill \u201cin a matter of days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bOnce the infrastructure bill is app<\/a>roved by the Senate, Schumer said, he would move to have the chamber pass a proposed $3.5 trillion overall spending plan before its members leave for August recess. \u200b\u200bHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said the Senate must pass both before bills she\u2019s take \u200bup infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite some bumps in the road, always expected on two bills as large and comprehensive as these, we remain firmly on track to achieve our two-track goal,\u201d Schumer\u200b said.\u200b<\/p>\n

Negotiations hit a speedbump Saturday because\u00a0the text of the massive infrastructure bill \u2014 a Biden administration priority \u2013 was still unwritten. But Schumer kept the senators in the Capital to continue working on it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The measure passed a couple of procedural hurdles last week, and Republican supporters and key negotiators anticipated that the GOP\u2019s backing would continue.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), one of the senators involved in the talks, said on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union\u201d<\/a> on Sunday that she expects a vote this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really are just about finished,\u201d Collins \u200bsaid, adding that\u00a0\u201clarge parts of the text have been shared with Senate offices.\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we will be able to lay down the bill later today and begin perhaps consideration of some amendments. My hope is that we\u2019ll finish the bill by the end of the week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bAsked if enough Republicans will support the bill to allow overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold, Collins said, \u201cI believe [they] will.\u200b<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery senator can look at bridges and roads, the need for more broadband, waterways in their states, seaports, airports and see the benefits, the very concrete benefits \u2014 no pun intended \u2014 of this legislation,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The fate of the spending bill is less certain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Schumer wants to pass the infrastructure bill by a bipartisan effort but will move the $3.5 trillion spending package through reconciliation, a procedural move that allows the narrowly divided 50-50 Senate to pass legislation by a simple majority. Vice President Kamala Harris can cast the deciding vote if necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u200bSen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia \u2014 a key Democratic vote in the Senate \u2014 said there are no guarantees that reconciliation will be successful because of lingering questions about how the\u00a0bill, which includes spending on social<\/a> programs, will be paid for.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t really guarantee anybody. I have not guaranteed anybody on any of these pieces of legislation,\u201d Manchin said\u200b on CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould we like to do more? Yes, you can do what you can pay for. This is paid for. Our infrastructure bill is all paid for,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the other [bill], as far as reconciliation goes, it should be looked at the same,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I said we\u2019re going to get the budget resolution. Let\u2019s start the process and then see where it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bManchin added that the packages should be considered individually.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn that, we should just work in good faith and be honest with each other, so no one\u2019s misled \u200bin \u200bany way, shape or form, and there should be no quid pro quo: \u2018You do this, I will do this,\u2019 \u201d Manchin said.<\/p>\n

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday reiterated the Democrats\u2019 position of linking both bills. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to hold on to that bargain. If there is not a reconciliation bill in the House, and if the Senate does not pass the reconciliation bill, we will uphold our end of the bargain and not pass the bipartisan bill until we get all of these investments in,\u201d she said on\u00a0CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
