\n Nestled in the Chiefs\u2019 mammoth, $503 million deal with Patrick Mahomes is proof that the franchise quarterback had Chris Jones\u2019 back.<\/p>\n

The reigning NFL MVP made it clear to general<\/a> manager Brett Veach during the negotiation process that he didn\u2019t want to force the team into a situation where they\u2019d have to choose between his long-term security and building a dynasty, a sentiment that deeply impacted the star defensive tackle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Pat\u2019s deal got done, Pat texted me and said, \u2018Let\u2019s get this thing done. I left some on the table; let\u2019s get this thing done,\u201d Jones told reporters during a video press conference on Monday. \u201cAnd that\u2019s when I had the security that me and the Chiefs were going to work something out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones, 26, agreed a four-year, $85 million deal one day before the July 15 deadline for teams to sign franchise-tagged players to extensions. Jones was the Chiefs\u2019 second-round pick in 2016. Since entering the league, the Mississippi State product has accrued 33 sacks and seven forced fumbles and was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2019.<\/p>\n

Frustrated after the team app<\/a>lied the franchise tag in March, the lineman threatened to hold out if he wasn\u2019t given an extension. The status of any long-term deal he would receive was going to be dependent on the details of Mahomes\u2019 deal, which was the team\u2019s No. 1 priority at the time.<\/p>\n

But Lombardi Trophies aren\u2019t won with quarterbacks alone, which is why it\u2019s crucial to note that the Chiefs won\u2019t be over-leveraged with their 24-year-old signal-caller, at least for the next couple of years. The blockbuster deal will not incur additional cap hits for the two years remaining on his rookie deal plus the fifth-year option. This important detail gives the team flexibility to retain talent elsewhere on the roster, while still giving Mahomes unprecedented football financial security.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe both have the same goal of creating a dynasty, building something special in Kansas City with coach Reid and all the talent we have here,\u201d Jones continued. \u201cWe all have the same mindset, we want to keep this team together, so whatever we have to do to make sure that we stay together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were driven and determined this whole time,\u201d Veach said. \u201cOur plan was to do a lot of the things we\u2019ve done this offseason, but right at the top of that list was Pat Mahomes and Chris Jones, and everyone knew that. So when you have two elite players \u2014 you don\u2019t find these guys, you just don\u2019t draft them year after year. These guys come once every couple of years.<\/p>\n

\u201cChris is not a guy you can just find in any other draft, so when you have a player that talented, that special, you\u2019re driven and determined. It took longer than anticipated just because of the unknown.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
