“#Beloved former Post paginator Dominick ‘Dom’ Marrano dies at 74<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Dominick \u201cDom\u201d Marrano, The Post\u2019s beloved former chief paginator known for his good nature and \u201cBrooklyn-basted wisdom,\u201d died Sunday after a long battle with lung cancer and emphysema. He was 74.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in Gravesend, Marrano made his bones on The Post\u2019s copy desk in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n

He toiled at the tabloid for nearly 37 years before he retired in 2008 to care for ailing wife Janet, who died in 2012.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the most honest, credible, high-integrity guy I knew,\u201d said sports columnist Phil Mushnick, who met Marrano when he joined The Post as a copy kid in 1973.<\/p>\n

At the time, Marrano was part of what Mushnick called \u201cour internal mafia\u201d of \u201cBrooklyn Italian guys straight out of central casting.\u201d So much so that Marrano once auditioned for HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Sopranos.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI looked up to him,\u201d Mushnick said, \u201cI wanted to be around Dom Marrano.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two once spent hours outside the ring at Madison Square Garden\u2019s Felt Forum \u201cdodging bottles\u201d when a riot broke out after a boxing match in the \u201970s.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was brilliant,\u201d Mushnick recalled. \u201cHe had a great perspective, an ability to boil things down into very few words \u2026 very concise, very entertaining and to the point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marrano earned a reputation as a hard-working and fun-loving news<\/a>paperman and was also remembered by his numerous friends as a kind and generous mentor to younger generations of reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a great man and a good friend,\u201d pre-press technician Richard \u201cRico\u201d Rossiello said. \u201cHe looked out for people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Childhood friend Peter Tocco said it was Marrano who got him his job at The Post, where he worked for about 40 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe grew up at the paper,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

While he didn\u2019t have any kids himself, Marrano had lots of nieces and nephews and was \u201cgreat with everyone else\u2019s children,\u201d Tocco said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe my best man, godfather to my first son \u2026 I trusted him with my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Journalist Jerry Capeci said Marrano and his wife \u201cserved as an extra set of parents for my kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cDom was a very special guy,\u201d Capeci said. \u201cHe was a good newspaperman, a great friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marrano, who loved the ocean and enjoyed fishing, spent the last 12 years of his life in Long Beach, friends said. He also had the travel<\/a> bug, setting off on trips to China and South Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mark of the man was that he was a good man,\u201d Mushnick said.<\/p>\n

Loved ones can say their final goodbyes Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cusimano & Russo Funeral Home in Brooklyn, where a eulogy will be given at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

The family will have a private burial service Wednesday at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
