Today, we share some quotes from Amanda Knox about the movie Stillwater.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n<p>In the movie <strong><em>Stillwater<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>Matt Damon<\/strong> plays a father who moves to France after authorities accuse his daughter (played by <strong>Abigail Breslin<\/strong>) of killing her roommate. If the premise sounds familiar, that\u2019s because co-writer\/producer\/director <strong>Tom McCarthy <\/strong>(<em>Spotlight<\/em>) based it on the story of <strong>Amanda Knox<\/strong>. She\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amanda_Knox\">the woman<\/a> who was accused \u2014 and ultimately acquitted \u2014 of murdering her roommate while she was studying abroad in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2021\/07\/stillwater-movie-matt-damon-amanda-knox\">recent interview with <em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>, McCarthy said of the inspiration for <em>Stillwater<\/em>, \u201cWe decided, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s leave the Amanda Knox case behind\u2019\u2026 But let me take this piece of the story \u2014 an American woman studying abroad involved in some kind of sensational crime and she ends up in jail \u2014 and fictionalize everything around it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-amanda-knox-twitter-thread-about-stillwater\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Amanda_Knox_Twitter_Thread_About_Stillwater\"><\/span>The Amanda Knox Twitter Thread About Stillwater<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>But to Knox, this was not a sensational crime. And it is not just something to be conveniently fictionalized. After reading the interview, she took to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> to respond to his comments about using parts of her story to craft a fictional narrative that is still reminiscent of her own experiences. <\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amandaknox\/status\/1420871392266911746\">a Twitter thread<\/a>, Knox wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cDoes my name belong to me? My face? What about my life? My story? Why does my name refer to events I had no hand in? I return to these questions because others continue to profit off my name, face, &amp; story without my consent. Most recently, the film \u2018Stillwater.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Issue_with_the_Ending\"><\/span>The Issue with the Ending<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>McCarthy may not have made a direct adaptation of her story, but Amanda Knox is still inextricably linked to <em>Stillwater<\/em>. Reviews mention her name and headlines speculate the similarities between the movie and the actual story.\u00a0According to Knox, her reputation is tied to the crime. Especially when it comes to the ending of <em>Stillwater<\/em> and McCarthy\u2019s interpretation of her story. She says it \u201creinforces an image of me as a guilty and untrustworthy person.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Does my name belong to me? Most recently, the film <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/STILLWATER?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#STILLWATER<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\/ a thread<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Amanda Knox (@amandaknox) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amandaknox\/status\/1420871392266911746?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 29, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Murder_of_Meredith_Kercher_by_Rudy_Guede\"><\/span>The Murder of Meredith Kercher by Rudy Guede<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>She addresses what it means for McCarthy to use her name and call the tragic events \u201cthe Amanda Knox case.\u201d This completely erases Meredith Kercher, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murder_of_Meredith_Kercher\">the murdered woman<\/a>. As well as Rudy Guede, Kercher\u2019s actual convicted murderer. Headlines continue to omit Kercher and Guede, only mentioning Amanda Knox. <\/p>\n<p>She tweeted an example, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThis focus on me led many to complain that Meredith had been forgotten. But of course, who did they blame for that? Not the Italian authorities. Not the press. Me! Somehow it was my fault that the police and media focused on me at Meredith\u2019s expense. The result of this is that fifteen years later, my name is the name associated with this tragic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of events, of which I had zero impact on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Amanda_Knox_Article_About_Stillwater\"><\/span>The Amanda Knox Article About Stillwater<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Amanda Knox expanded on her thread about <em>Stillwater<\/em> in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/07\/amanda-knox-stillwater-matt-damon\/619628\/\">a recent article for <em>The Atlantic<\/em><\/a>. It digs deeper into the consequences of what it means to base a movie on the sensationalized story that dominated the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> ten years ago. She discusses the power dynamics in telling these stories and who really gets to tell who\u2019s story. <\/p>\n<p>She writes:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>In light of the #MeToo movement, more people are coming to understand how power dynamics shape a story. Who had the power in the relationship between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, the president or the intern? Shorthand matters. Calling that event \u201cthe Lewinsky scandal\u201d fails to acknowledge the vast power differential, and I\u2019m glad that more people are now referring to it as \u201cthe Clinton affair,\u201d which explicitly calls out the person with the most agency in that series of events. I would love nothing more than for people to refer to the events in Perugia as \u201cthe murder of Meredith Kercher by Rudy Guede,\u201d which would make me the peripheral figure I always was, the innocent roommate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_Ethical_Mandate\"><\/span>An Ethical Mandate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In both her Twitter thread and her article, Amanda Knox illustrates the power dynamics at work. Not only with <em>Stillwater<\/em> but with the entire way the media creates and shapes her image. The movie is a prime example of how stories like Knox\u2019s are not seen as true stories about people. Rather, they are sensational tales with high entertainment value. <\/p>\n<p>And McCarthy\u2019s comments about his inspiration add to the issue. He may not be creating a direct adaptation of what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened in Italy to Meredith Kercher, but he is still cherry-picking the details to create something not entirely his own.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Knox understands the Hollywood machine. She says, \u201cThere\u2019s money to be made and [McCarthy] has no obligation to approach [her].\u201d But she still asks for consideration as her name is continually referenced in reviews and any other press coverage of the movie. \u201cMcCarthy has no legal obligation to do so,\u201d she adds. \u201cAnd he is, after all, telling a fictional tale. But legal mandates are not the same as moral or ethical ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Knox has extended an invitation to both Tom McCarthy and Matt Damon to appear on her podcast, <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.knoxrobinson.com\/labyrinths.html\">Labyrinths<\/a><\/em>, to further discuss the issue.
