We\u2019ll show you how you can do it.<\/p>\n<p>One cause for some people disabling the service is the rise of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/91113\/researchers-find-new-windows-exploit-accidentally-tell-hackers-how-to-use-it\/\">PrintNightmare vulnerability<\/a>\u00a0that can let hackers take over and remotely control PCs. While Microsoft shares a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/744645&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fmsrc.microsoft.com%2Fupdate-guide%2Fvulnerability%2FCVE-2021-34527\">security advisory for this exploit<\/a> and works on a proper patch,\u00a0you can disable the vulnerable service.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_PrintNightmare\"><\/span>What Is PrintNightmare?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The PrintNighmare is a zero-day vulnerability\u00a0the exploits a critical flow by running a compromised printer driver (local or remote) to gain control of your PC. You can read more about <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kb.cert.org\/vuls\/id\/383432\">how it works<\/a>. At the moment, all Windows versions are in the line of fire because the vulnerability lies in the Windows Print Spooler service (spoolsv.exe), which handles the printing jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Until Microsoft releases a proper patch, one option to remedy the situation on your own is to change a specific printer policy using the Group Policy Editor. This way you\u2019ll prevent any incoming remote connection requests to your printer. (However, this will only work on Professional editions of Windows 10.)<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t change the group policy setting (for example, if you\u2019re running the Home edition of Windows 10), you can disable the Print Spooler service entirely on your computer using the Windows Services panel. Keep in mind you\u2019ll need administrator account privileges for that.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Disable_the_Print_Spooler_Service_From_Windows_Services_Panel\"><\/span>Disable the Print Spooler Service From Windows Services Panel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can use the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/school\/using-windows-admin-tools-like-a-pro\/lesson8\/\">Windows Services panel to disable Print Spooler services from running automatically, especially when you use word processors or similar apps.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> You will <em>not<\/em> be able to print or fax with your PC while the Print Spooler service is disabled. When you\u2019re ready to print again, you\u2019ll need to reenable it with the same method you used here.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Press the Windows+R to open a Run dialog box.
