The <em>Mad Max: Fury Road<\/em> and <em>The Favourite<\/em> actor has been hired to star in <em><strong>Renfield<\/strong><\/em>, Universal Pictures\u2019 upcoming film about a man who finds himself under Dracula\u2019s control. <strong>Chris McKay<\/strong>, the filmmaker behind Amazon\u2019s recent sci-fi action film <em>The Tomorrow War<\/em>, is directing.<span id=\"more-690378\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Deadline reports that Nicholas Hoult (<em>About a Boy<\/em>, <em>Warm Bodies<\/em>, <em>The Great<\/em>) is set to play the title role in <em>Renfield<\/em>, which is written by\u00a0<strong>Ryan Ridley<\/strong> (<em>Rick and Morty<\/em>) and based on an original story outline from <strong>Robert Kirkman<\/strong> (<em>The Walking Dead<\/em>). Earlier this summer, Kirkman described the film as an \u201cextremely violent comedy,\u201d and said the film is essentially about the Renfield character \u201cbeing Dracula\u2019s henchman and how shitty a job that is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Bram Stoker\u2019s <em>Dracula<\/em> novel, Renfield is a lunatic at an asylum who is under the influence of Count Dracula. He eats bugs and other small creatures in an attempt to consume their life-force, and eventually faces down the imposing vampire in a last-ditch effort to exert his remaining humanity. Interestingly, though, this new movie will not be a period piece set in 1800s England. Deadline says\u00a0the film is \u201cbelieved to take place during the present day and is not a period piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><\/p>\n<p>Kirkman, <strong>David Alpert<\/strong>, <strong>Bryan Furst<\/strong>, and <strong>Sean Furst<\/strong> are producing, and <strong>Samantha Nisenboim<\/strong> will executive produce.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hoult_Has_Some_Big_Shoes_to_Fill\"><\/span>Hoult Has Some Big Shoes to Fill<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Renfield has <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared on screen many times over the years. <strong>Dwight Frye<\/strong>\u00a0famously played him in Universal\u2019s 1931 <em>Dracula<\/em> film, frequent Werner Herzog collaborator <strong>Klaus Kinski<\/strong> played Renfield in 1970\u2019s <em>Count Dracula<\/em>, and in more recent years, he\u2019s been played on the small screen by <strong>Nonso Anozie<\/strong> in 2013, <strong>Samuel Barnett<\/strong> in <em>Penny Dreadful<\/em>, and <strong>Mark Gatiss<\/strong> in last year\u2019s Netflix drama. But among the most memorable iterations of Renfield on screen is <strong>Tom Waits<\/strong> in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s 1992 movie\u00a0<em>Bram Stoker\u2019s Dracula<\/em>, in which Waits disappears into the role and commits to the character\u2019s instability in a haunting, disturbing way.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds like this new <em>Renfield<\/em> movie won\u2019t be as dark as some of the previous versions of <em>Dracula<\/em>, and that has me excited to see what Hoult brings to the table with this lighter tone. Universal is continuing to develop other projects based on the classic Universal Monsters, and as much as I enjoyed last year\u2019s <em>The Invisible Man<\/em>, I\u2019m glad this one sounds like it will have a totally different feel to it.
