It\u2019s time for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to do\u00a0one\u00a0honorable thing: step down. If he refuses, lawmakers should remove him. Pronto.<\/p>\n

The case for his departure \u2014 whether voluntary or forced \u2014 was clear long before state Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James released her damning report Tuesday. Now there\u2019s no longer any excuse for delay.<\/p>\n

Even Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, who oversees impeachment proceedings but who has until now practically broken his back trying to protect the gov, admitted\u00a0that Cuomo\u2019s \u201cconduct,\u201d as outlined in James\u2019 report, \u201cwould indicate someone who is not fit for office.\u201d Heastie called the victims\u2019 details \u201cgut-wrenching\u201d and said Cuomo has \u201clost the confidence of the Assembly Democratic majority\u201d and \u201ccan no longer remain in office.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heck, President Joe Biden, a Cuomo ally, also thinks the gov should go. He said in March that Cuomo would need to resign if the investigation confirms the allegations. Now that it has, Biden said Tuesday he\u2019s sticking to his position.<\/p>\n

Good for him: Heastie\u2019s descript<\/a>ion of the governor\u2019s conduct, after all, was spot on \u2014 it was absolutely disgusting. James\u2019 report recounts troubling tales from 11 separate women involving action that Cuomo himself would blast if the accused were a Republican or some other enemy. \u201cThere should be a zero tolerance policy when it comes to sexual harassment & must send a clear message that this behavior is not tolerated,\u201d Cuomo tweeted in May 2013.<\/p>\n

In one case, the governor appears to have arranged for a female state trooper to be hired as part of his Protective Services Unit and then sexually harassed her repeatedly, the report says. Another woman accuses him of groping her breast. Several say he hugged and kissed them inappropriately, including on the lips, and while \u201cgrabbing Executive Assistant #1\u2019s butt,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n

Albany County\u2019s district attorney office announced Tuesday that it\u2019s now conducting a criminal probe into Cuomo\u2019s conduct. Obviously, that probe must follow all leads aggressively, no matter where they lead. Meanwhile, though, it\u2019s hard to see how Cuomo can command any respect and properly govern with this report (let alone potential criminal charges) hanging over his head.<\/p>\n

Yes, he denies he crossed any lines or did anything \u201cinappropriate,\u201d though he admits he did regularly kiss and hug many people. He claims his victims \u2014 all 11 of them! \u2014 simply misinterpreted his well-meaning statements and gestures.<\/p>\n

Yet James\u2019 probers found his denials \u201clack credibility\u201d and are \u201cinconsistent with the weight of the evidence.\u201d They note his failure to recall specific incidents and \u201cblanket denials\u201d stand \u201cin stark contrast the strength, specificity and corroboration of the complainants\u2019 recollections, as well as the reports of many other individuals who offered observations and experiences of the governor\u2019s conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report also calls out Cuomo\u2019s staffers for \u201ccontributing\u201d to the harassment and their \u201cimproper and retaliatory response\u201d to the allegations, including, in one case, \u201cunlawful retaliation.\u201d Yet the fish rots from the head; this is yet more reason for Cuomo\u2019s ouster.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s face it: It\u2019s going to be impossible for the governor to continue running New York government\u00a0\u2014\u00a0especially at such a crucial moment\u00a0\u2014\u00a0following James\u2019 report alone. Yet as bad as the findings are, they don\u2019t even touch on his numerous\u00a0other<\/em>\u00a0scandals \u2014 most notably, his order for nursing homes to accept COVID-contagious patients, and then his coverup of the actual number of residents of those homes who died of the disease.<\/p>\n

New Yorkers need a governor they can look up to, someone they can trust as honorable, honest and decent. Cuomo has shown he\u2019s not up to it. It\u2019s long past time for him to go.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
