\n A new father carrying on his dad\u2019s love of the Yankees. A Pete Alonso-loving nurse. A cancer-surviving, Mets-obsessed grandma. A baseball-mad thoracic surgeon and vice president of NYU Langone Health. A bus-driving former stadium vendor and member of The 7 Line. And The Pin Man.<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite the novel coronavirus pandemic hitting the area hard and impacting these New Yorkers, they are in favor of the game<\/a> returning. They feel it is needed. These six diehard baseball fans shared their stories with The Post. Here\u2019s Part One of six.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dayne Koster was basically born a Yankee fan. At the hospital, his father, Wayne, had a baby Yankees helmet and jersey waiting for him. After \u201cMama\u201d and \u201cDada,\u201d his third word was \u201cYankees.\u201d Almost nightly during the season, Koster and his dad would talk about the team.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Koster is torn about his favorite team returning. His father won\u2019t be there to share it with him. Wayne Koster passed away on June 17 at the age of 72 \u2014 two days before the birth of his grandson Dominic \u2014 from lung cancer and a stomach ulcer. The family didn\u2019t know about those issues until an autopsy was performed, because Wayne resisted going to the hospital, fearful he would catch the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis would be the first season that would be happ<\/a>ening that he won\u2019t be able to watch with me. It does hurt a lot,\u201d Koster said. \u201cHe was so excited to see Gerrit Cole pitch. He was so excited to see a healthy Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton mash home runs. It\u2019ll definitely be bittersweet watching that first game against the Nationals and not be able to talk to him after the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a draining couple of months for Koster, a 32-year-old office manager at Restaurant Depot. His mother, Diane Stumpf, contracted COVID-19, and there wasn\u2019t much optimism she would survive because she is a diabetic. Both of her legs were amputated from the knee down, but she has survived. Then came the birth of his first child, Dominic, named after former St. John\u2019s star Sir\u2019Dominic Pointer. Doctors induced labor after his wife, Alyssa, was diagnosed with preeclampsia. Two days later was Father\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a whirlwind of emotions,\u201d the Bayside native said.<\/p>\n

Sports have always been a release for Koster, a way to block out everything negative going on in his life. He attended the Yankees\u2019 2009 World Series<\/a> clincher and Mariano Rivera\u2019s finale, and goes to 20 games a year with his wife. While Koster knows it will be strange to have baseball back without his father around, he is excited about the Yankees returning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would bring a little sense of normalcy,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery night for God knows how long, at 7 p.m. I would turn on the YES Network and watch a Yankees game, and I would not have a care in the world for three hours. I would definitely love to just relax and unwind and watch them play.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
