A top communications manager at Facebook helped Gov. Andrew Cuomo fight sexual misconduct allegations \u2014 including by helping leak confidential files about accuser Lindsey Boylan and by participating in regular discussions about Cuomo\u2019s communications strategy, according to the New York attorney general<\/a>\u2019s bombshell investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dani Lever \u2014 who had worked in Cuomo\u2019s press operation since 2014 but left in August 2020 to join Facebook as a communications manager \u2014 played a key role in Cuomo\u2019s communications strategy even while working for Facebook, according to the investigation released Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In December 2020, former Cuomo staffer Lindsey Boylan became the first of several women to accuse the governor of sexual harassment. Hours later, Cuomo communications director Rich Azzopardi decided to send Boylan\u2019s confidential personnel files to several journalists in what investigators called an attempt to \u201cdiscredit and disparage\u201d her.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the attorney general\u2019s report, Lever helped Cuomo\u2019s staffers disseminate the files \u2014 even though she had already been working at Facebook for months.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. Lever coordinated with some of the reporters who received the documents to let them know that the Executive Chamber would be sending them,\u201d reads the report<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The smear attempt came amid Lever\u2019s broader participation in Cuomo\u2019s defense as part of a \u201cteam of advisors from within and outside the Chamber [who] had ongoing and regular discussions about how to respond to the allegations publicly\u201d that also included Cuomo\u2019s CNN host brother Chris, according to the attorney general. Lever\u2019s name app<\/a>ears 25 times in the attorney general\u2019s report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reached by phone, Lever told The Post she could not talk because she had to attend a meeting. Lever and Facebook\u2019s broader press team did not immediately reply to questions sent by email, including about whether Lever had Facebook\u2019s permission to work with the governor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the days after Boylan first accused Gov. Cuomo of misconduct, the governor\u2019s team reportedly worked on a draft letter or op-ed that included complaints against Boylan from her confidential personnel files, as well as unspecified interactions between the accuser and her male colleagues. Drafts of the letter also \u201cimpugned her credibility\u201d and suggested that she could be working with supporters of then-President Donald Trump and a politician who wanted to unseat Cuomo as governor, according to the attorney general\u2019s investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cuomo aide Melissa DeRosa then allegedly sent a version of the letter to several people including Lever, asking her to sign it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lever \u2014 who served as Cuomo\u2019s first ever female press secretary in 2016 \u2014 declined to put her name on the letter, suggesting that it amounted to \u201cvictim shaming,\u201d according to the investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However Lever signed a different statement in support of Cuomo in February, disputing Boylan\u2019s accusation that the governor suggested they play \u201cstrip<\/a> poker\u201d while on a taxpayer-funded jet in 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were on each of these October flights and this conversation did not happen,\u201d Lever said in a joint statement with other former and current aides John Maggiore, Howard Zemsky and and Abbey Fashouer Collins.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Investigators also said that Lever was copied on internal emails about communications strategy and participated in at least one conference call with Cuomo staffers.<\/p>\n

In the damning report \u2014 which has led to calls for Cuomo\u2019s resignation from President Joe Biden and Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Eric Adams, among dozens of other politicians \u2014 investigators suggest that Lever and other outside advisors enjoyed an inappropriate level of access to Cuomo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of them was officially retained in any capacity by the Executive Chamber or any of the individuals involved,\u201d the investigators wrote of Lever, Chris Cuomo and other outside advisors. \u201cNonetheless, they were regularly provided with confidential and often privileged information about state operations and helped make decisions that impacted State business and employees \u2014 all without any formal role, duty, or obligation to the State.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lever joined Facebook to manage the company\u2019s responses to breaking issues related to products and policies as part of a team called Strategic Response Communications, the New York Daily News<\/a> reported<\/a> last year when she left Cuomo\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prior to joining Cuomo\u2019s office in 2014, Lever worked as a press assistant for President Barack Obama\u2019s 2012 presidential campaign and worked in press relations at the Clinton Foundation, among other roles, according to her LinkedIn profile.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
