Stunning photos show a California firefighter rescuing an American flag despite being surrounded by huge flames from the Dixie wildfire that razed much of a historic Gold Rush town overnight.<\/p>\n

The unidentified firefighter was snapp<\/a>ed carefully loading the Stars and Strip<\/a>es and a pole it was attached to from a burning home in Greenville late Wednesday \u2014 with a massive fireball filling the frame behind him.<\/p>\n

The patriotic rescue came as flames made \u201ctheir way down the street,\u201d wrote the photographer, Josh Edelson<\/a>, who also snapped numerous other images of the wildfire he said \u201cripped through and destroyed most of Greenville.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other images showed numerous buildings engulfed in the Golden State\u2019s largest wildfire that on Wednesday gutted much of the northern Sierra Nevada town, which dates to the Gold Rush and has buildings more than a century old.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say the majority of downtown Greenville is completely destroyed,\u201d tweeted photographer Stuart Palley<\/a>, who also shared images of the devastation \u2014 including a bent-over street lamp that melted<\/a> in the heat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart is broken for this beautiful little town,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

The three-week-old blaze, which has blackened well over 435 square miles, appeared to have been coming under control until 40-mph gusts and bone-dry vegetation fueled it again, officials have said.<\/p>\n

Late Wednesday, the Plumas County Sheriff\u2019s Office warned<\/a> the town\u2019s approximately 800 residents, \u201cIf you are still in the Greenville area, you are in imminent danger and you MUST leave now!!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you remain, emergency responders may not be able to assist you,\u201d the department warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did everything we could,\u201d fire spokesman Mitch Matlow said of tackling the devastating blaze. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s just not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red flag weather conditions of high heat, low humidity and gusty winds were expected to be a continued threat through Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

The trees, grass and brush were so dry that \u201cif an ember lands, you\u2019re virtually guaranteed to start a new fire,\u201d Matlow said.<\/p>\n

Similar risky weather was expected across Southern California, where heat advisories and warnings were issued for interior valleys, mountains and deserts for much of the week.<\/p>\n
