“#Nintendo and COLOPL Settle Shironeko Project Control Scheme Lawsuit<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

After three years, the lawsuit between\u00a0Nintendo and\u00a0Shironeko Project<\/strong><\/em> mobile game<\/a> developers COLOPL has come to a close<\/span><\/a> with\u00a0COLOPL agreeing to pay Nintendo\u00a03.3 billion yen (US$30.24 million)<\/strong>, which includes any future licensing fees\u00a0of Nintendo patents. The video game giant has now withdrawn the lawsuit from Tokyo courts.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The lawsuit came about in 2018 when Nintendo argued that\u00a0Shironeko Project<\/strong><\/em> had infringed on patents related to touch-screen controls that the Kyoto company had invented while developing the Nintendo DS and related software, including\u00a0Super Mario 64 DS. Since then, the two companies have been trading blows, with\u00a0COLOPL asserting<\/span><\/a> that it had not in fact touched Nintendo’s patent for on-screen controls. This escalated<\/span><\/a> earlier this year when Nintendo increased the amount it was asking for from 4.4 billion yen (US$40.32 million) to\u00a09.6 billion yen (US$87.99\u00a0million) due to the length of time the case has gone on. Though with the settlement today, it seems Nintendo didn’t even get the original amount it had asked for.<\/p>\n

Both<\/span><\/a> companies<\/span><\/a> released similar statements, both not disclosing how much the case was settled for. Though Netlab discovered<\/span><\/a> the case report<\/span><\/a> to investors from\u00a0COLOPL that stated that the company would be down 3.3 billion yen\u00a0(US$30.24 million) due to having to pay Nintendo.<\/p>\n

In 2018,\u00a0COLOPL announced that a sequel to\u00a0Shironeko Project<\/strong><\/em>, named\u00a0Shironeko New Project<\/strong><\/em>, would be coming to the Nintendo Switch, which Nintendo confirmed<\/span><\/a> it wouldn’t block as “software sales and the lawsuit are completely separate matters,” but the game hasn’t been heard from for a few years.<\/p>\n

Shironeko Project<\/strong><\/em> also inspired a TV anime<\/a> series<\/a> called\u00a0Shironeko Project ZERO CHRONICLE<\/strong><\/em> which aired in 2020.<\/p>\n
