“#Martin Scorsese bashed Marvel to ‘get press’ for ‘The Irishman’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The Gunn went off. <\/p>\n

James Gunn is the latest director to address Martin Scorsese\u2019s divisive 2019 Marvel-bashing incident, claiming that the \u201cGoodfellas\u201d director was simply attempting to garner attention for \u201cThe Irishman.\u201d The \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d director dropped the criticism while promoting his upcoming film \u201cThe Suicide Squad\u201d on MTV\u2019s\u00a0\u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d\u00a0podcast.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI just think it seems awful cynical that he would keep coming out against Marvel \u2014 and then that is the only thing that would get him press for his movie,\u201d Gunn, 55, told pod host Josh Horowitz. \u201cHe\u2019s creating his movie in the shadow of the Marvel films, and so he uses that to get attention for something he wasn\u2019t getting as much attention as he wanted for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was referring to Scorsese\u2019s 2019 interview with Empire<\/a>, in which the 78-year-old Hollywood icon said that he tried to watch Marvel movies<\/a> but they weren\u2019t his cup of tea. <\/p>\n

\u201cI tried, you know? But that\u2019s not cinema,\u201d lamented the Italian-American auteur, who was doing media<\/a> rounds for his gangster epic \u201cThe Irishman\u201d at the time. \u201cHonestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme<\/a> parks.\u201d <\/p>\n

Scorsese\u2019s critique sparked a backlash from the superhero sphere\u2019s rabid fanbase, with \u201cIron Man\u201d Robert Downey Jr. and other Marvel actors also skewering the \u201cDeparted\u201d director over his remarks. <\/p>\n

However, Gunn\u2019s latest criticisms were not well received by social media cinephiles, who flocked to the Oscar winner\u2019s defense. <\/p>\n

\u201cI will care about what director of Suicide Squad thinks of Martin Scorsese when he does 10% of the work Marty has done for cinema,\u201d tweeted one Scorsese supporter.<\/a><\/p>\n

Another wrote<\/a>, \u201cThe fact that scorsese mentioned marvel once and then never brought it up again while people\/interviewers in fandoms AND hollywood have not stopped mentioning it since 2019 is genuinely disturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n

One Twitter film buff comparatively snarked<\/a>, \u201cAt 31 Martin Scorsese directed Mean Streets, a powerfully personal story about Italian-American identity, Catholic guilt, and responsibility \u2026 At 34 James Gunn published The Toy Collector, a roman \u00e0 clef in which the protagonist James Gunn sticks cigarettes into his \u2018penis hole.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018He\u2019s creating his movie in the shadow of the Marvel films, and so he uses that to get attention for something he wasn\u2019t getting as much attention as he wanted for it.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

However, their defense may have been a little overzealous, as Gunn\u2019s commentary wasn\u2019t entirely negative. Elsewhere in the interview, the \u201cJames Gunn\u2019s PG Porn\u201d director said that Scorsese \u201csaid a lot of things\u201d about Marvel movies \u201cthat I agree with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of heartless, soulless spectacle films out there that don\u2019t reflect what should be happening,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cI can\u2019t tell you the amount of times I\u2019ve talked to film directors before they went and made a big movie, and said, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re in this together, let\u2019s do something different with these big movies. \u201cLet\u2019s make them something different than everything that has come before them.\u2019 <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then see them cater to every single studio whim and be grossed out, frankly,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

In response to the backlash, the \u201cScooby Doo\u201d screenwriter added<\/a>, \u201cAlso for the record, Martin Scorsese is probably the world\u2019s greatest living American filmmaker. <\/p>\n

\u201cI love & study his films & will continue to love & study his films. I disagree with him solely on one point: That films based on comic books are innately not cinema, that\u2019s all. \u201c<\/p>\n
