\n Two years after \u201cyanny or laurel\u201d reached the White House, the executive mansion was consumed Tuesday with debate about whether a journalist called White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany a \u201clying bitch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimberly Halkett of Al Jazeera denies swearing and says she told McEnany, \u201cOK, you don\u2019t want to engage.\u201d<\/p>\n

But journalists and political aides replayed the tape repeatedly Tuesday, straining to hear what Halkett muttered after a heated exchange.<\/p>\n

A reporter for The Post, seated immedia<\/a>tely in front of Halkett, heard her say that McEnany didn\u2019t want to engage and did not hear her curse.<\/p>\n

But other journalists lamented that a mask covering Halkett\u2019s face made it impossible to see her lips during the crucial moment, or determine which way the comment went.<\/p>\n

Halkett, who seemed to swiftly leave the White House press workspaces, weighed in to defend herself from a mounting social media firestorm.<\/p>\n

\u201c[T]here\u2019s a lot of misreporting out there about that briefing,\u201d\u00a0Halkett wrote on Twitter. \u201cI DID NOT. What I said was, \u2018OKAY, YOU DON\u2019T WANT TO ENGAGE.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Halkett had tangled with McEnany at the briefing over whether President Trump was doing enough to discourage \u201cexternal sabotage\u201d to the November election. McEnany defended Trump and his focus on the security of mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are legitimate questions about mass mail-in voting. And I know you don\u2019t want to hear them, which is why you talk over me,\u201d McEnany said.<\/p>\n

Halkett then said, \u201cOn the China vaccine research, this is very important \u2014,\u201d but McEnany shot her down, saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve gotten two questions, which is more than some of your colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Halkett then made the disputed utterance.<\/p>\n

All audio from the briefing \u2014 both for TV broadcasts and the White House\u2019s YouTube livestream \u2014 comes through the same feed, likely ruling out the possibility that different microphone locations caused clashing perceptions.<\/p>\n

Tuesday marks the grand return of Trump\u2019s 5 p.m. coronavirus briefings after a nearly three-month break. Many of the journalists from McEnany\u2019s briefing will also attend Trump\u2019s.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
