JAKARTA, Aug 5 \u2013 Construction on an\u00a0Indonesian tourism\u00a0project\u00a0dubbed \u201cJurassic Park\u201d on social media<\/a> will continue, the Southeast Asian country\u2019s environment ministry said on Thursday,\u00a0despite\u00a0UNESCO\u00a0warnings\u00a0the plans could have a negative environmental impact.<\/p>\n

Work on a series<\/a> of tourism\u00a0projects in\u00a0Indonesia\u2019s Komodo National Park, a\u00a0UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage Site, began last year, sparking concerns about threats to the local economy and the fragile habitat of the\u00a0park\u2019s namesake, the Komodo dragon.<\/p>\n

Last month, officials from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) told a World Heritage Committee conference that the\u00a0project\u00a0required a new environmental impact assessment over illegal fishing concerns and the potential risk to the Komodo dragon\u2019s natural habitat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis\u00a0project\u00a0will proceed\u2026 it\u2019s been proven to have no impact,\u201d Wiratno, a senior official at\u00a0Indonesia\u2019s environment ministry, told Reuters.<\/p>\n

UNESCO\u00a0officials told last month\u2019s meeting that they had requested an updated assessment from the\u00a0Indonesian government but received no response. Wiratno said a new assessment was being drafted and could be sent in September.<\/p>\n

It was not clear exactly what the\u00a0project, centred on the island of Rinca, entails. Last year, the government said it was building a \u201cpremium tourism spot\u201d on the island.<\/p>\n

In a separate statement, Wiratno said the\u00a0project\u00a0mainly included renovation work on existing structures and did not pose any danger to the rare Komodo dragons.<\/p>\n

Rima Melani Bilaut of the\u00a0Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI), an environmental group, said the\u00a0project\u00a0could impact the local community, as well as disturb the dragons.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the government to develop tourism that\u2019s based on the people. There are people living there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Last year, social media users likened the\u00a0project\u00a0to one on a dinosaur island featured in the \u201cJurassic Park\u201d films after photos of a dragon standing in front of a big vehicle were widely shared online.<\/p>\n

Indonesia\u00a0is home to around 3,100 Komodo dragons, according to government data. The unique lizards grow up to 10 feet long and have a yellow forked tongue.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
