Reality TV\u2019s latest binge-worthy <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> features a matchmaker \u2014 not a bud-wielding bachelor \u2014 calling the shots.<\/p>\n<p>While most dating shows focus on bikinis and hot tub hookups, Netflix\u2019s \u201cIndian Matchmaking\u201d has viewers hooked on its addictive blend of dishy drama and budding romance \u2014 with a modern twist on arranged marriage.<\/p>\n<p>After dropping on July 16, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> is already awash with hot takes and memes about the eight-episode saga led by Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia, known as Sima Auntie to her clients.<\/p>\n<p>Taparia \u2014 who <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>s between India and the US in search for the perfect matches for her picky patrons \u2014 seems to have her work cut out for her as she sets up six lovelorn singles with different romantic prospects.<\/p>\n<p>And while matchmaking may seem like an outdated means to marriage, several of the potential matchees admit that dating <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s and online courting are to blame for their relationship woes and are ready to take a more old-school approach to finding love.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything you need to know about the eight-episode series created by Oscar-nominated director Smriti Mundhra.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_is_%E2%80%98Sima_Auntie\"><\/span><strong>Who is \u2018Sima Auntie\u2019?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16014440\"><img alt=\"Sima Auntie\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>\u201cSima Auntie\u201d Taparia<\/span><span>Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Taparia is a highly sought-after matchmaker throughout the world, especially well-known to many high-profile Marwari families, who are based in the northwestern region of India, according to her website.<\/p>\n<p>The matchmaker, who\u2019s dubbed the \u201chuman Tinder\u201d on the show, was herself set up in an arranged marriage at 19 years old and has been married for 37 years.<\/p>\n<p>Although she began her business in Mumbai, her clients now stretch across the world to Australia, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, the UK and the US.<\/p>\n<p>The matchmaker takes a more modern approach to matchmaking, saying in the first episode, \u201cIn India, we don\u2019t say \u2018arranged marriage\u2019 \u2014 there\u2019s marriage and then love marriage.\u201d She hopes to find her clients the latter.<\/p>\n<p>Taparia\u2019s services were even tapped by the filmmaker herself, who requested her help in finding a husband 15 years ago, according to the Los Angeles Times. Mundhra then used Taparia as one of the main characters in her 2017 documentary, \u201cA Suitable Girl,\u201d which explores arranged marriages as well.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_the_matchmaking_work\"><\/span><strong>How does the matchmaking work?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16014445\"><img alt=\"\"Indian Matchmaking.\"\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>\u201cIndian Matchmaking\u201d<\/span><span>Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Taparia lands a client, she always begins her process by visiting their home, talking to relatives and asking them questions about their lives and partner preferences.<\/p>\n<p>She then creates a \u201cr\u00e9sum\u00e9\u201d of sorts, to use as a matchmaking tool with things like education, work, hobbies \u2014 and a photo, of course.<\/p>\n<p>But she also uses more unconventional methods, like astrology and face reading, which is the act of assessing someone\u2019s personality based on the appearance of their face.<\/p>\n<p>With each side\u2019s approval, Taparia sets up a meeting place for the clients, which often sees a romantic prospect traveling long distances just to meet.<\/p>\n<p>The centuries-old South Asian tradition of arranged marriage is still widely practiced today in India, but refusing a partner is also accepted. Self-arranged marriages are also very common, which is where a couple who are already romantically involved go through an arranged marriage with that specific person.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_are_the_main_players\"><\/span><strong>Who are the main players?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16014450\"><img alt=\"Aparna in \"Indian Matchmaking.\"\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Aparna in \u201cIndian Matchmaking\u201d<\/span><span>Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The season kicks off by introducing viewers to three clients: Aparna Shewakramani, a 34-year-old attorney from Houston with unreasonably high expectations; Pradhyuman Maloo, 31, a picky bachelor in Mumbai; and Nadia Christina Jagessar, a Morris Plains, New Jersey, event planner who\u2019s been unlucky in love.<\/p>\n<p>Shewakramani quickly proves to be one of Taparia\u2019s most challenging setups as she finds flaws in almost every man she meets, while Jagessar became a fan favorite for her sweet attitude and brush with heartbreak on camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAparna from Indian matchmaking deserves to be lonely for the rest of her life while Nadia deserves the whole world,\u201d one fan tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>Three new clients are then brought into the fold, including Ankita Bansal, a bold Delhi-based entrepreneur; Vyasar Ganesan, a laid-back guidance counselor from Austin, Texas; and Akshay Jakhete, an overly picky recently graduated student from Mumbai.<\/p>\n<p>The drama is sure to not disappoint as heartbreak, love and tears are all caught on camera.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Not_everyone_is_a_fan\"><\/span><strong>Not everyone is a fan.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16014451\"><img alt=\"\"Indian Matchmaking.\"\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>\u201cIndian Matchmaking\u201d<\/span><span>Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While beloved by many, the show has also received its fair share of backlash already. One criticism is the glamorization of arranged marriages, which, as one person on Twitter explained, has been \u201chell for most of her twenties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents started \u2018looking\u2019 for a potential groom while I was in my early twenties (23, I think) because while they were very liberal, it turned out they were pretty conventional too. I wasn\u2019t told about this \u2018search\u2019 till two days before the boy and his parents were coming over,\u201d tweeted Nikita Doval in a thread with over 22,000 likes. \u201cThe arranged marriage system ruined my relationship with my parents, especially my mum through my twenties. It took a happy go lucky, cheerful kid and made her a nervous wreck who would every single day grapple with the question; what\u2019s wrong with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The appearance of colorism and casteism with some clients listing \u201cfair\u201d skin and coming from a \u201cgood family\u201d or caste as desirable traits have also been widely criticized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason arranged marriage is predominantly a \u2018Desi\u2019 thing is because it is rooted in caste. Its not about finding love, it\u2019s about keeping the bloodline \u2018pure\u2019 or some other such nonsense.
