It seems that MS Paint isn\u2019t the only app<\/a> Windows 11 is saving from the grave. Microsoft\u2019s Panos Panay<\/a> says that the Snipping Tool will see a major redesign in the next Windows Insider build. It will also gain a bundle of new features from Snip & Sketch, the app that was supposed to replace the original Snipping Tool.<\/p>\n

Microsoft has tried its best to kill the Snipping Tool since 2018<\/a>. It\u2019s introduced several new, better solutions with names that are confusingly similar to \u201cSnipping Tool,\u201d including Snip & Sketch, but you can\u2019t teach lifelong users to adopt a new app. That\u2019s why Microsoft is giving up and doing what it should\u2019ve done years ago\u2014just update the app everyone\u2019s already using and get rid of the duplicates.<\/p>\n

Functionally, the new Snipping Tool will be almost identical to Snip & Sketch. Your screen will go dark as you capture and crop an on-screen image. Then, the Snipping Tool app will open to let you see all your screenshots. You can also draw over screenshots in this app or copy them to your clipboard. Microsoft says that a future update will allow you to copy and paste Snipping Tool images to any folder you want without going through the usual Save As process.<\/p>\n

The new Snipping Tool\u2019s design is very Windows 11-like, with rounded corners and glassy accents. Panos Panay says that the new Snipping Tool will debut in the next Windows 11 Insider build, likely late this month or early next month. Other classic apps could also see a redesign, though Microsoft hasn\u2019t confirmed such plans.<\/p>\n
