\n Hoping to avoid crowded buses because of the coronavirus pandemic? The MTA has you covered.<\/p>\n

The agency\u2019s myMTA mobile app now provides a real-time count of how many people are riding buses, transit officials said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSocial<\/a> distancing on public transit is a real challenge,\u201d MTA bus chief Craig Cipriano said during a demo of the new tech in Manhattan.<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers [now] have the ability to see how many riders are on the bus, and can make their own informed choices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cipriano said the new feature is currently in place on 40 percent of buses across the city, and is set to be expanded.<\/p>\n

MTA officials launched a similar feature on the Long Island Rail Road last month.<\/p>\n

The bus capacity counts come from infrared and 3D motion sensors pre-installed on the buses, said Sunil Nair, the MTA\u2019s chief technology<\/a> officer for buses.<\/p>\n

Nair said the sensors take 3D outlines of riders as they enter, which helps the tech differentiate between people and items such as luggage, strollers or bicycles.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe stand by the app. The rider count has been accurate each and every time,\u201d he said during Tuesday\u2019s demo.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s real time, so there\u2019s no lag here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Riders can also access real-time crowd counts using the MTA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

Bus ridership decreased less than subway ridership during the city\u2019s coronavirus lockdown, and has returned faster in the weeks and months since.<\/p>\n

Other steps taken by the MTA to protect bus operators and riders from the virus include requiring masks, eliminating fare collection and opening windows.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
