If you\u2019d like to make Windows 11 safer to use for a computer novice, you can disable the execution of app installation files and choose to only allow apps from the Microsoft Store. Here\u2019s how to set it up.<\/p>\n

First, open Windows Settings by pressing Windows+i on your keyboard. Or, you can right-click the Start button and select \u201cSettings\u201d from the menu that appears.<\/p>\n

When Windows Settings opens, select \u201cApps\u201d in the sidebar, and then choose \u201cApps & Features.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Apps & Features, click the drop-down box labeled \u201cChoose where to get apps.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

In the \u201cChoose where to get apps\u201d menu, select \u201cThe Microsoft Store only (Recommended).\u201d<\/p>\n

Once that\u2019s set, you\u2019re free to close Settings. The option takes effect immedia<\/a>tely.<\/p>\n

After that, if you try to run an installation file (such as an .EXE or .MSI file that you\u2019ve downloaded), Windows 11 will prevent it from running, and you\u2019ll see a \u201cThe app you\u2019re trying to install isn\u2019t a Microsoft-verified app\u201d message in a new window. This is a good optional feature because it can potentially prevent a novice from installing malware that they downloaded without realizing it.<\/p>\n

At this point, you can click \u201cGet apps from Store,\u201d and the Microsoft Store will open. There, you can search for a similar app to see whether it\u2019s available.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, if you change your mind and want to install the file anyway, click the \u201cChange my app recommendation settings\u201d link. You\u2019ll be taken back to Settings > Apps > Apps & Features, where you can set \u201cChoose where to get apps\u201d to \u201cAnywhere.\u201d Good luck!<\/p>\n
