It\u2019s been almost a decade since that particular super-powered eagle or beagle landed in movie theaters. Set in a sideways Seattle where teens become telekinetics and the bullied become bullies,\u00a0the 2012 found-footage film helped put actors like <strong>Dane Dehaan<\/strong> and <strong>Michael B. Jordan<\/strong> on the map.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing inspiration from films outside the genre like the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anime<\/a> Olympics predictor <em>Akira<\/em>, it\u2019s arguably still one of the best non-Marvel, non-DC superhero flicks out there. Yet there are other names attached to it that might now rightfully cause potential moviegoers (or really anyone who\u2019s a feminist) to wrinkle their noses.<\/p>\n<p>Champions of women: not to worry. A women-led\u00a0<em>Chronicle<\/em> sequel is on the way. We can all safely retreat to our separate corners, confident in the knowledge that no one will have an opinion about this and no old\u00a0<em>Ghostbusters<\/em> debates will ever rear their ugly head, either.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><br \/>\nSpeaking to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/simonthompson\/2021\/08\/04\/jungle-cruise-producers-discuss-the-ingredients-of-a-hit-and-how-to-secure-a-future-for-movie-theaters\/?sh=12c726a34972\">Forbes<\/a> (via <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theplaylist.net\/chronicle-2-20th-century-studios-female-college-students-10-years-later-20210805\/\">The Playlist<\/a>), producer <strong>John Davis<\/strong>\u00a0first offered a reminder of <em>Chronicle<\/em>\u2018s financial success, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2018Chronicle\u2019 was literally the best return on investment, any of my <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> ever made. \u2018Chronicle\u2019 we did for $12 million, and it grossed $126.64 million worldwide. Then it had a huge afterlife in syndication. It\u2019s one of the most financially successful movies in my stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He also elaborated on the direction of the sequel:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re working on \u2018Chronicle 2\u2019 right now, and I think it\u2019s going to be great. We\u2019re working on it at Fox (20th Century Studios). It\u2019s going to give us a chance to tell the story in a different way. We\u2019re going to tell it from the female point of view. It will have been ten years since the event h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened in Seattle, and a lot of it\u2019s going to deal with fake <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and real news and cover-ups. More interestingly, it\u2019s the next generation getting these powers that are corruptive. These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 --><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-691647 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Dane-Dehaan-700x392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Dane-Dehaan.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Dane-Dehaan-360x202.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_Incels_and_Other_Not-So-Fantastic_Beasts\"><\/span>On Incels and Other Not-So-Fantastic Beasts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m not a woman,\u00a0so I myself can\u2019t really give a woman\u2019s point of view on this <em>Chronicle<\/em> news. However,\u00a0I do think it\u2019s interesting that Davis used those words to describe <em>Chronicle 2,<\/em>\u00a0or whatever they end up calling this sequel. His initial mention of a new set of teens \u201cgetting these powers that are corruptive\u201d preceding \u201cThese are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey,\u201d makes me raise an eyebrow. It sounds like he\u2019s saying that these educated young women, fresh out of college and ready to enter the world, will get these corruptive powers and become a threat to society. Just let that possibility sink in for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>I could be wrong, and this could be a misinterpretation of a brief statement. That said, words matter.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of words, I have a confession to make: even as a supposed English language teacher, the word \u201cincel\u201d was not in my vocabulary until the movie\u00a0<em>Joker<\/em> came out in 2019. Chalk it up to living abroad. The joke was on me because, according to the woman who coined the phrase \u201cinvoluntary celibate\u201d \u2014 now abbreviated as incel \u2014 \u201cangry men\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/apr\/25\/woman-who-invented-incel-movement-interview-toronto-attack\">had already hijacked<\/a> that word well before <em>Joker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This is all a roundabout way of saying that Dane Dehaan\u2019s character, Andrew Detmer, in <em>Chronicle<\/em> is something of an incel. Just last month, we saw the same actor as another violent incel character, Jim Dooley, in <em>Lisey\u2019s Story<\/em>\u00a0(go bool yourself).<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_3 -->Andrew Detmer is just a fictional character, but screenwriter <strong>Max Landis<\/strong>\u00a0is the one who conceived him. Landis has since been accused of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Max_Landis#Controversy\">some pretty horrendous things<\/a>. He was one of the figures who got caught up in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weinstein_effect\">the Weinstein effect<\/a> as it swept through Hollywood from late 2017 onwards. This is the dude who got the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> ball rolling on calling Rey a Mary Sue in <em>Star Wars: The Force Awakens.\u00a0<\/em>He\u2019s been accused of misogyny and sexual assault and is now <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly regarded as an industry pariah.<\/p>\n<p>Director <strong>Josh Trank <\/strong>said he even\u00a0went so far as to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/chronicle-director-josh-trank-says-he-banned-max-landis-1835625218\">ban\u00a0Landis<\/a> from the set of <em>Chronicle<\/em>. Reports of Tranks\u2019s own troubling behavior on and off the set of <em>Fantastic Four\u00a0<\/em>tarnished his image as well. He\u2019s since had a soft rebound with Tom Hardy in\u00a0<em>Capone<\/em>, and dredging up this old dirty laundry is not an attempt to damage his or anyone\u2019s reputation any further.<\/p>\n<p>Some guys are more than capable of digging their own holes.\u00a0You know what they say, fellas: \u201cLet he [emphasis on \u2018he\u2019] who is without sin cast the first stone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-691649 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Sky-Football-700x392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Sky-Football-700x392.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Sky-Football-360x202.jpg 360w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Sky-Football-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Chronicle-Sky-Football.jpg 1232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Devils_Hidden_in_Plain_Sight\"><\/span>Devils Hidden in Plain Sight<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Having said all that, approaching the sequel to <em>Chronicle<\/em>\u00a0as women-centered might offer a way to work in some of this real-world stuff as subtext. Let\u2019s keep playing sky football with this for a minute or two longer.\u00a0Obviously, the knee-jerk reaction from some bros in dark Internet corners is going to be, \u201cDon\u2019t you <em>Ghostbusters<\/em> us again with your female franchise installments!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you think bringing the real world into it while equalizing and sequel-izing <em>Chronicle<\/em>\u00a0with a story that revolves around women is\u00a0a bad idea, consider how much more depth the iconic movie villain Keyser Soze has now. <em>The Usual Suspects<\/em> is another film with a director and Oscar-winning supporting actor who have since fallen into disgrace.
