“#U.N. climate report likely to deliver warnings on warming<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

LONDON, Aug 5 \u2013 Eight years after its last update on\u00a0climate\u00a0science<\/a>, the United Nations is set to publish a\u00a0report\u00a0Monday that will\u00a0likely\u00a0deliver\u00a0even\u00a0starker\u00a0warnings\u00a0about how quickly the planet is warming \u2013 and how damaging the impacts might get.<\/p>\n

Since the last\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on\u00a0Climate\u00a0Change (IPCC) in 2013, both greenhouse gas emissions and the average\u00a0global\u00a0temperature have only continued to climb.<\/p>\n

The new\u00a0report\u00a0will forecast how much more emissions can be pumped into the atmosphere before the average\u00a0global\u00a0temperature rises more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. That revised carbon budget may serve as a guide to governments as they map out their own emissions-cutting plans before a major\u00a0U.N.\u00a0climate\u00a0conference in November.<\/p>\n

Scientists say the world must halve\u00a0global\u00a0emissions by 2030 and cut them to net-zero by 2050 in order to prevent\u00a0global\u00a0warming\u00a0above 1.5C, which could trigger catastrophic impacts across the globe.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0climate\u00a0change already is fueling deadly and disastrous weather across the globe. Nearly all of the world\u2019s glaciers are melting faster. Hurricanes are stronger. Just this year, unprecedented rains unleashed floods across parts of central China and Europe, while wildfires are tearing across Siberia, the U.S. West and the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0report\u00a0will cover not only the fact that we are smashing record after record in terms of\u00a0climate\u00a0change impacts, but show that the world today is in unchartered territory in terms of sea level rise and ice cover,\u201d said Kelly Levin, chief of science, data and systems change at the Bezos Earth Fund philanthropy.<\/p>\n

Overall, the\u00a0report\u00a0\u201cwill underscore the urgency for governments to ramp up\u00a0climate\u00a0action,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

And while the 2013\u00a0report\u00a0said it was \u201cextremely\u00a0likely\u201d that human industry was causing\u00a0climate\u00a0change \u2013 which suggests scientists were at least 95% confident in that statement \u2013 this year\u2019s\u00a0report\u00a0will\u00a0likely\u00a0use even stronger language.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, it is going to be stronger than what we had in the past because of the growing\u00a0warming\u00a0of the planet,\u201d said Corinne Le Qu\u00e9r\u00e9, a\u00a0climate\u00a0scientist at the University of East Anglia who has contributed to previous IPCC assessments. \u201cThat\u2019s going to be one of the main points. It will be discussed very, very carefully, and scrutinized,\u201d Le Qu\u00e9r\u00e9 told\u00a0reporters.<\/p>\n

What is the IPCC?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since its establishment in 1988, the IPCC has released five so-called Assessment\u00a0Reports updating the established science on\u00a0climate\u00a0change, its impacts, future risks and ways to tackle the problems.<\/p>\n

But the IPCC itself is not made up of scientists. The panel includes government representatives from 195 countries who commission assessments from experts and academics across the world.<\/p>\n

In drafting those assessments, scientists consider thousands of individual studies published since the last IPCC\u00a0report. To finalize their latest assessments for the upcoming\u00a0report, scientists have been meeting virtually with policymakers since July 26, scrutinizing the details and language used in the draft.<\/p>\n

Governments can suggest changes to the text, but those must be agreed by consensus. The scientists then must ensure the changes are consistent with the scientific evidence.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s\u00a0report\u00a0is actually just part of what will go into the final Sixth Assessment\u00a0Report, or AR6, when it is released in 2022.<\/p>\n

The AR6 synthesis\u00a0report\u00a0will also include two other major chapters coming out next year \u2013 one on\u00a0climate\u00a0change impacts on communities, societies and economies and how they might adapt to cope, and another on ways of curbing emissions and reining in\u00a0climate\u00a0change. And it will include findings from three special\u00a0reports published since 2013, on the 1.5C threshold<\/a>, on the world\u2019s oceans and frozen regions<\/a>, and on land use and degradation. <\/a><\/p>\n

But Monday\u2019s chapter is one of the most highly anticipated, particularly after being delayed for months because of the COVID pandemic. Unlike the previous assessments, the chapter will use five possible emissions trajectories the world could follow rather than the previous four scenarios.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmissions scenarios are not intended to say: \u2018This is the future: pick one\u2019,\u201d said Ko Barrett, vice chair of the IPCC. \u201cPolicies are being implemented all the time, and the science is changing all the time, so it is just not fair to say we are on a certain trajectory.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
