Apple\u2019s new ARM-based Apple Silicon chips have seen big performance gains in optimized apps, so what does this mean for gaming?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Optimized_Games_Run_Best\"><\/span>Optimized Games Run Best<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apple is transitioning from Intel\u2019s 64-bit x86 architecture to its own ARM-based systems-on-chip (SoCs). The company has designed its own iPhone and iPad SoCs for well over a decade and is now applying the same approach and architecture to the Mac lineup.<\/p>\n<p>Since Apple Silicon and Intel chips are fundamentally different in how they interpret software instructions, they can\u2019t natively use the same software builds. Fortunately, Apple has updated its developer tools to allow developers to create universal binaries, which are optimized for both Intel and Apple Silicon models.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-744393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot_Full_-_Bastion_2.jpeg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"365\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Blizzard<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not everything has been updated, and most games are still only built for Intel Macs. It\u2019s early days for Apple Silicon, which means that there aren\u2019t many games that have been optimized for the new hardware. At the time of writing in July 2021, there are just a handful of titles that aren\u2019t ports.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/worldofwarcraft.com\"><em>World of Warcraft<\/em><\/a> was the first game to receive the Apple Silicon treatment with the release of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/us.forums.blizzard.com\/en\/wow\/t\/mac-support-update-november-16\/722775\">patch 9.0.2<\/a>. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/gb\/app\/disco-elysium\/id1508191454?mt=12\"><em>Disco Elysium<\/em><\/a>, a narrative-driven roleplaying game, has also been optimized for Apple Silicon. Also of note is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/app\/the-survivalists\/id1515959873\"><em>The Survivalists,<\/em><\/a> which is currently included with\u00a0Apple Arcade.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Apple_Arcade_Just_Works\"><\/span>Apple Arcade Just Works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apple Arcade takes the Netflix subscription model and applies it to mobile gaming. Imagine if Microsoft had designed Game Pass primarily with mobile platforms in mind, and you\u2019re most of the way there.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-744392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/apple_arcade.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Selection of games on Apple Arcade\" width=\"650\" height=\"413\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Apple<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The service features over 180 games that you can play on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Some are designed purely with touch interfaces in mind, while others have support for controller and mouse input. You can preview which Apple Arcade games are available by launching the Mac App Store and clicking on the Arcade tab.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a great mix of new and old titles on Apple Arcade, but the service is more <em>Angry Birds<\/em> than <em>APEX Legends<\/em>. If you\u2019re already paying for iCloud and Apple Music or Apple TV, you might be interested in upgrading to Apple One to get Apple Arcade for one flat fee.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"iPhone_and_iPad_Games_Run_Natively\"><\/span>iPhone and iPad Games Run Natively<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you have a Mac with Apple Silicon, you can download and run iPhone and iPad apps natively. This includes games that have been created with touch devices in mind, although developers can exclude their games if they wish. As a result, the user experience in some titles can be a bit wonky.<\/p>\n<p>iPhone versions of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/grand-theft-auto-san-andreas\/id763692274\"><em>GTA: San Andreas<\/em><\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/stardew-valley\/id1406710800\"><em>Stardew Valley<\/em><\/a>\u00a0run natively on Apple Silicon, providing even better performance than a top-of-the-line iPhone. Mobile games like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/asphalt-9-legends\/id1491129197\"><em>Asphalt 9: Legends<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/au\/app\/monument-valley\/id728293409\"><em>Monument Valley<\/em><\/a> also run fine. You\u2019ll need to do things like click and drag to emulate a swipe, while alternate inputs like right-click don\u2019t work. You\u2019ll also be limited to a small window on which to play, which is worse in iPhone apps compared with iPad versions.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an often underwhelming experience, but it\u2019s also the only way to play certain games. You can find games by simply searching the Mac App Store, or you can comb through your iPhone purchases, launch the store, click on your name in the bottom-left corner, and click \u201ciPhone &amp; iPad Apps\u201d on the Account screen.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Non-Optimized_Games_Might_Run_Under_Rosetta\"><\/span>Non-Optimized Games Might Run Under Rosetta<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apple\u2019s answer to getting older apps running on new Apple Silicon chips is Rosetta, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Source-to-source_compiler\">transpiler<\/a> that converts Intel-based applications into code that Apple Silicon can use. Since these apps don\u2019t run natively, expect performance to take a hit. It\u2019s not uncommon to see apps running at around 60% of their native speed using Rosetta.<\/p>\n<p>This solution is a stop-gap intended to allow early adopters to use their favorite native Intel apps while developers work on native Apple Silicon versions. Rosetta doesn\u2019t only work with desktop apps, it can work for many games, too.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/applesilicongames.com\">Apple Silicon Games<\/a> is a website that tracks which games you can play on your ARM-based Mac. This includes user-submitted reports for whether games run, what additional software is required (if any), which settings work best, and a rough idea of how the game performs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Apple M1 Windows Games Using CrossOver\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CGz8f0tjbo0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many of these games work without a hitch on Apple Silicon using Rosetta and an Intel Mac build.\u00a0What\u2019s even more promising is that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/61864\/crossover-enables-you-to-run-windows-apps-on-your-m1-powered-mac\/\">CrossOver<\/a> has already been updated to work natively on Apple Silicon. This project is a lot like the WINE compatibility layer in that it converts Windows binaries to run natively on an Intel Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Any games that previously ran the Windows version via CrossOver can now potentially run on Apple Silicon, too, although you should check the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/applesilicongames.com\/games\">Apple Silicon Games list<\/a> beforehand (and consider submitting your own reports).<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_Forget_about_Emulation\"><\/span>Don\u2019t Forget about Emulation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Emulators allow you to emulate gaming hardware like consoles and handhelds on a computer. This allows you to play software backups of games (known as ROMs). While emulation isn\u2019t illegal, downloading ROMs can be. We won\u2019t be linking to any websites that host these files, and you should comply with local copyright laws in your region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>Is Downloading Retro Video Game ROMs Ever Legal?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since emulation is often used to play older games, most emulators written for Intel Macs that are able to run under Rosetta should work fine. For example, do-it-all emulator <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openemu.org\">OpenEmu<\/a> has no problem running Nintendo 64, SNES, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CP_System\">CPS1<\/a> games (among others) via Rosetta.<\/p>\n<p>Some projects, like GameCube and Wii emulator <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dolphin-emu.org\">Dolphin<\/a>, have already received native Apple Silicon ports. A post on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dolphin-emu.org\/blog\/2021\/05\/24\/temptation-of-the-apple-dolphin-on-macos-m1\/\">Dolphin blog<\/a> describes the M1 chip in glowing terms, noting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere\u2019s no denying it; macOS M1 hardware kicks some serious ass. It absolutely <em>obliterates<\/em> a two and a half year old Intel MacBook Pro that was over three times its price all while keeping within <em>ARM\u2019s<\/em> reach of a powerful desktop computer. If a project is still under active development, it\u2019s a fair expectation that it will receive a native Apple Silicon version. For older projects, Rosetta will have to do.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cloud_Gaming_Is_an_Option_Too\"><\/span>Cloud Gaming Is an Option, Too<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The other option for playing games on your Mac is to use a cloud gaming service like Microsoft\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.xbox.com%2Fen-US%2Fxbox-game-pass%2Fcloud-gaming\">Xbox Cloud Gaming<\/a> beta for Game Pass subscribers and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stadia.google.com\">Google Stadia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These services require little more than an internet connection and the right app or web browser. The games run on remote hardware and are then streamed to your Mac. You can use a controller and often maintain progress between cloud and physical versions.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Game Pass is still in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macstories.net\/news\/microsofts-xbox-cloud-gaming-beta-launches-on-the-mac-pc-iphones-and-ipads\/\">invite-only beta on Mac,<\/a>\u00a0although some users have reported that it\u2019s possible to stream cloud games using <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/macgaming\/comments\/murl68\/game_pass_is_working_on_apple_silicon_m1_macs_via\/\">Parallels and a copy of Windows 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Want_More_Consider_Consoles_or_a_Windows_PC\"><\/span>Want More?
