\n From the right: John Lewis\u2019 Lesson for America<\/strong><\/p>\n

John Lewis\u2019 life \u201cis worth celebrating for its own sake,\u201d declares The Wall Street Journal editorial board, \u201cbut it\u2019s all the more valuable for what it says about the progress of his country.\u201d One of 10 children of an Alabama sharecropper, Lewis, who died Friday, was \u201cborn into a world\u201d of state-enforced white supremacy, segregated schools and lunch counters. Yet he won election to Congress in 1986, served there until his death and watched his nation send a black man to the White House. \u201cMuch of the left\u201d dismisses America\u2019s racial progress, ignoring \u201cthe central principle of the Declaration of Independence \u2014 \u2018all men are created equal.\u2019\u200a \u201d Lewis\u2019 life is \u201ca refutation of those who would now consign America to a future of continuing racial rancor and division.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: Demography Isn\u2019t Destiny<\/strong><\/p>\n

The idea that Democrats are guaranteed to become the US majority party \u201cis based on a bowdlerization of my own work\u201d with John Judis, Ruy Teixeira explains at Persuasion: Their \u201cEmerging Democratic Majority\u201d wasn\u2019t a guarantee of victory, but an argument for how to build one, exploiting trends such as \u201cthe growth of minority communities and cultural shifts among college graduates.\u201d The huge \u201cbut\u201d: \u201cWe also \u00ademphasized that building this majority would require a very broad coalition, including many voters drawn from the white working class\u201d \u2014 which was the true Obama coalition. Yet \u201cthis crucial nuance was quickly lost,\u201d leading to \u201ca decade-long electoral disaster\u201d for Democrats. If party operatives don\u2019t admit \u201cthe need to app<\/a>eal to voters \u00adbeyond the ranks of their most supportive groups,\u201d then \u201cthe next decade could turn out to be just as bitter as the last.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: The Old Right Is the New Left<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe laughed at the Republican busybody who couldn\u2019t joke, declared war on dirty paintings and peered through your bedroom window,\u201d \u00adrecalls Matt Taibbi on his blog. But \u201cnow that person has switched sides, and nobody\u2019s laughing.\u201d Years ago, \u201can artist had to do something fairly ambitious, like piss on a crucifix in public, to get conservative protesters off their couches. Today Matt Yglesias signing a group letter with Noam Chomsky is considered threatening.\u201d And \u201ca lot less than booking a Robert Mapplethorpe exhibit\u201d \u2014 the artist was infamous for his phallic images \u2014 \u201ccan get you in the soup.\u201d Rather, \u201ca headline, a \u00adretweet, even likes are costing people jobs.\u201d The big difference: The left \u201chas the bureaucratic juice to shut down mass media<\/a> efforts to ridicule its thinking\u201d because it\u2019s \u201cwinning the culture war.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education beat: Discount Remote College!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the obvious differences between online and in-person \u00adeducation, colleges and universities are largely set on maintaining \u2014 if not raising \u2014 tuitions,\u201d observes Carine Hajjar at National Review, even as they move most classes online. Najjar, a rising senior at Harvard University, \u00adlaments the \u201cshrinking of the typical college experience.\u201d Students pay not just for an education, but also for an experience: \u201cThe value of college classes relies on the very real value of campus engagement\u201d \u2014 asking professors and guest speakers questions, \u201cdining-hall conversations with classmates,\u201d networking, \u201clearning to live with your peers.\u201d So it\u2019s \u201csimply illogical\u201d for so many colleges going online to continue to \u201ccharge full \u00adtuition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mourner: No Pet Is Just an Animal<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a damn cat, I know,\u201d mourns The Spectator\u2019s Sam Leith. \u201cThe world is burning, and people are dying up and down the country, and I\u2019m upset about a cat.\u201d Leith\u2019s friend of 17 years \u201cwas a black moggy with a white blaze on her chest, and I called her Henry before I discovered she was female.\u201d Henry \u201cwas a standard cat,\u201d fighting \u201cinvisible enemies,\u201d stealing socks and scratching furniture. \u201cShe was also a colossal pain,\u201d with \u201crandom outbreaks of homicidal mania\u201d and meowing \u201cto be let out and to be let back in again, or to be let in and then be let back out again. I loved her.\u201d \u201cGrief for a pet is grief for the vanishing of the tiny unknowable universe that is her consciousness; but it\u2019s also grief for a part of your own life.\u201d Yes, it\u2019s \u201cjust a damn cat. And I feel wretched.\u201d<\/p>\n
