“#Is ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Ending With Season 5?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

June (Elisabeth Moss) made it to safety and freedom in Canada in The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> Season 4 \u2014 and killed Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) in the finale \u2014 so could the end be closer than we might think for the Hulu drama?<\/p>\n

Jordan Helman, the head of script<\/a>ed content for Hulu Originals, isn\u2019t saying, but he hasn\u2019t completely ruled out the possibility. \u201cWe\u2019re having conversations right now about what the future of The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> holds,\u201d he told Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWhat [executive producers] Bruce [Miller], Warren [Littlefield] and Lizzie [Moss] have delivered for us over the course of the past several years really warrants a tremendous amount of trust both ways. And so I have the deepest belief that they\u2019re going to come to us with a plan about how much longer the show needs to go on.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unknown at this point, Helman does think that they\u2019ll have the answer \u201cin the coming months\u201d and if Season 5 is indeed going to be its farewell, \u201cthat would happen sooner rather than later.\u201d And it\u2019s no surprise that it sounds like Hulu\u2019s not going to cancel the series<\/a>; it has grown in viewership season over season, with Season 3 to Season 4 up 32 percent.<\/p>\n

As fans of the Margaret Atwood novel on which the series is based know, there\u2019s more to the story of Gilead, in a sequel book and series, The Testaments<\/em>. That\u2019s also part of the conversation about the drama\u2019s future. \u201cThere is also a conversation about how and when we introduce The Testaments<\/em> into the larger world of Gilead on Hulu,\u201d Helman told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>. So even if The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> ends sooner rather than later, there\u2019s more to come in that world.<\/p>\n

As we wait to find out the drama\u2019s future \u2014 including when we\u2019ll even see Season 5 \u2014 we know we can expect to see \u201cJune finding a way to go forward\u201d following that shocking finale, Miller told TV Insider. \u201cI think what June is realizing is that every day you have to put your head down and fight. How is she going to do that and still be a whole human person? Or maybe she\u2019s just gotta give up being a whole human person and put her head down and fight anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

And whenever the show ends, we have to see June and Luke (O-T Fagbenle) reunite with their daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake), who\u2019s still in Gilead, right? \u201cI feel like [the reunion with Hannah is] the end of the show,\u201d Fagbenle shared. \u201cI feel like to want for that is to want for the end of the drama, and I think as long as that reunion is unresolved, we\u2019ll have more episodes of Handmaid\u2019s<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether that happens soon or not, Miller did say that Hannah\u2019s parents will be \u201cas active as they can be, [and] they will continue to be,\u201d when it comes to getting her back.<\/p>\n

But whenever that series finale comes (in Season 5 or beyond), don\u2019t necessarily expect a happily ever after. \u201cThose creatively sadistic creatives we have making the show, I don\u2019t think they\u2019re going to give us a happy ending where Luke and Hannah and June walk off into the sunset and build a new house in the Maldives,\u201d Fagbenle said. \u201cI think there\u2019s probably more blood and torture on the horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n
