Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hit back at President Biden Friday after the commander-in-chief snarked \u201cGovernor who?\u201d when asked about the Republican\u2019s mask and vaccine policies a day earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I\u2019m not surprised that Biden doesn\u2019t remember me. I guess the question is \u2018What else has he forgotten?’\u201d DeSantis said at an event at Chipola College in Marianna, in the Florida Panhandle. <\/p>\n

\u201cBiden\u2019s forgotten about the crisis at our southern border, I can tell you that,\u201d the governor continued. \u201cBiden has forgotten about the inflation that\u2019s biting the budgets of families all throughout our country. Biden has forgotten about the demonstrators who are fighting for freedom down in Cuba. Biden\u2019s even forgotten about the constitution itself, as we saw with what he did with this moratorium.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can just tell you, I\u2019m the \u2018Governor who\u2019 protects parents and their ability to make the right choices for their kids\u2019 education,\u201d DeSantis riffed. \u201cI\u2019m the \u2018Governor who\u2019 protects jobs and education and businesses in Florida by not letting the federal government lock us down. I\u2019m the governor who answers to the people of Florida, and not the bureaucrats in Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n

Washington and Tallahassee have been locked in a war of words since Tuesday, when Biden criticized governors, like DeSantis and fellow Republican Greg Abbott of Texas, who have banned mask and vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf some governors aren\u2019t willing to do the right thing to beat this pandemic, then they should allow businesses and universities who want to do the right thing to be able to do it,\u201d Biden said. \u201cI say to these governors, \u2018Please, help.\u2019 But if you aren\u2019t going to help, at least get out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis fired back with both barrels Wednesday, accusing Biden of trying to \u201csingle out\u201d Florida over its rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a guy who ran for president saying he was gonna \u2018shut down the virus\u2019. And what has he done?\u201d DeSantis asked during remarks in Panama City. \u201cHe\u2019s imported more virus from around the world by having a wide-open southern border\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor also accused Biden of wanting to emulate New York City\u2019s sweeping vaccine mandate and said America faces the choice between remaining a free society or a \u201cbiomedical security state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re coming after the rights of parents in Florida, I\u2019m standing in your way. I\u2019m not going to let you get away with it. If you\u2019re trying to deny kids a proper in-person education, I\u2019m gonna stand in your way and I\u2019m gonna stand up for the kids in Florida,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cIf you\u2019re trying to restrict people, impose mandates, if you\u2019re trying to ruin their jobs and their livelihoods and their small business, if you are trying to lock people down, I am standing in your way, and I\u2019m standing for the people of Florida.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo why don\u2019t you do your job? Why don\u2019t you get this border secure, and until you do that, I don\u2019t want to hear a blip about COVID from you,\u201d the governor concluded.<\/p>\n

When Biden was asked Thursday if he had a response to DeSantis, he dropped the \u201cGovernor who?\u201d line before adding, \u201cthat is my response\u201d and walking away.<\/p>\n

White House press secretary Jen Psaki was in a more expansive mood Friday. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur message continues to be that if you don\u2019t want to abide by public health guidelines, don\u2019t want to use your role as leaders, elected officials, then you should get out of the way and let public health officials guide localities, schools, universities to do the \u2014 or local schools as well \u2014 to do exactly the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about the possibility that funding could be withheld from Florida school districts that issue mask mandates in defiance of DeSantis\u2019 recent executive order, Psaki answered: \u201cAs a parent myself of two young children \u2026 I want public health officials to make decisions about how to keep my kids safe, not politicians. And not only is Governor DeSantis not abiding by public health decisions, he\u2019s fundraising off of this.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, my view is that \u2014 and our view, as an administration, is that parents in Florida, parents across the country should have the ability and the knowledge that their kids are going to school and they\u2019re in safe environments,\u201d she added. \u201cThat shouldn\u2019t be too much to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ongoing spat could be a preview of a presidential campaign. DeSantis is widely considered to be a top contender for the GOP nomination in 2024 \u2014 especially if former President Donald Trump does not run.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
