In Philly\" class=\"large\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"news-caption\">\n<span>Leon Bennett\/Getty Images<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"body-copy  js-entry-text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<span class=\"location\">Philadelphia, PA \u2013 <\/span> There are a handful of names that are always associated with the origins of West Coast gangsta rap \u2014 Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube,\u00a0Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Ruthless Records and Death Row Records represent an era when both iconic labels had a stronghold on the music industry, raking in millions of dollars in revenue at the height of their success.<\/p>\n<p>One of those artists who helped put West Coast gangsta rap firmly on the map and was integral to Death Row\u2019s dominance was Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound.<\/p>\n<p>Along with his partner-in-rhyme Daz Dillinger, Kurupt was behind the Grammy Award-nominated single \u201cWhat Would You Do?\u201d and albums such as the 2x-platinum <em>Dogg Food<\/em> and 2006\u2019s <em>Cali Iz Active.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dogg Pound &amp; Snoop Doggy Dogg - What Would You Do?\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cp3TErlFw1M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday (August 7), Kurupt\u2014real name Ricardo Brown Jr. \u2014will be honored with his own street name but not in California where he\u2019s lived for over 30 years. Instead, he will receive the honor in his hometown of Philadelphia, where he was born in 1972. The ceremony takes place at 3 p.m. ET at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Roosevelt, where his parents have owned the house on the hill for the past 49 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not often something like this h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens,\u201d Kurupt tells <em>HipHopDX.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re from a small part of this Philadelphia situation. We\u2019re on the outskirts of Philly in Darby Township. All my family\u2019s in Philly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was bouncing back and forth between Philly and here in Darby Township, Sharon Hill. So I was bouncing back and forth, and these are just my stomping grounds. This is what made the MC. California made me the man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With influences ranging from his cousin Fred (AKA rapper Charome or Skippy G) to Rakim, Kurupt was enthralled by Hip Hop culture at an early age. His story will come full circle when Charome, who now owns a successful barbershop in Philly, will watch his baby cousin receive the honor.<\/p>\n<p>Making it even more profound is the fact Kurupt will be alive to see it. Unlike MF DOOM, Biz Markie, Big Pun and Phife Dawg, they never got to see the hometown love expressed in such a way. Kurupt knows he\u2019s in a unique situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means the world,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m totally shocked. God blessed me with the talent. God gave me the opportunities.
