As mad King George warbles in \u201cHamilton\u201d \u2014 \u201cYou\u2019ll be back.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the time has finally come. Yes, after more than a year, Broadway is \u201cOpening Up\u201d \u2014 just like in \u201cWaitress\u201d \u2014 but we\u2019ll all be masking up to watch our favorite shows.<\/p>\n

But its return means so much more than the chance to watch some soft-shoe with overpriced warm wine and snacks.<\/p>\n

For three-time Tony Award-winning producer\u00a0Bonnie Comley, who was app<\/a>ointed president of the Drama League\u2019s board of directors in June, it was heartbreaking to watch the doors shut on Broadway\u2019s 41 theaters amid the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/p>\n

\u201cWith artists, there is a longing, there is a sense of community,\u201d Comley, 55, exclusively told The Post. \u201cIt\u2019s an ambiguous loss. It\u2019s missing something that has no finality to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Broadway is an economic juggernaut. During the 2018-19 season, 14 million tickets were sold, and it contributed $14.7 billion to New York City\u2019s economy. Its closure left not just the performers out of work, but also the behind-the-scenes workers, from musicians to front of house and backstage staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople in the live-entertainment industry didn\u2019t know how much longer they were going to be out of work,\u201d Comley explained. \u201cFor the 25 people you see onstage, you don\u2019t see the 20 people in the pit and another 50 or 75 in the theater that are supporting the show. And there was a layer of despair and depression. Everyone is much more hopeful now. We know so much more about this virus and how it operates than we did a year and a half ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Broadway League<\/a> has put systems in place to ensure that theaters can reopen, including COVID \u201chall monitors\u201d from the Actors\u2019 Equity union to check that guidelines are maintained in the small spaces backstage.<\/p>\n

The producers of \u201cHarry Potter and the Cursed Child\u201d have also announced its return as one show instead of two separate parts in a COVID-safe adjustment.<\/p>\n

Performers and backstage crew will also have to be fully vaccinated. If they have a problem with this, \u201cthey just won\u2019t work,\u201d Comley warned.<\/p>\n

Ticket holders will also have to wear masks during performances and be vaccinated before they take a seat. These rules will be in place until at least the end of October.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we\u2019re going to take a look and\u00a0see where we\u2019re at,\u201d said Comley. \u201cThese policies are really in alignment with stores, schools and business in NYC.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comley, also the owner and founder of BroadwayHD, a streaming platform of live productions \u2014 a big plus during COVID \u2014 explained the league is trying to get 100,000 people back to work within the next year.<\/p>\n

Another big issue is the dearth of tourists due to the pandemic, as non-New Yorkers make up about 60 percent of audiences (15-25 percent are international). \u201cWe need these tourists back,\u201d said Comley, who with her tech savvy is trying to modernize the industry.<\/p>\n

During the break, many performers and crew had financial aid from the league as well as the Actors Fund and the Drama League.<\/p>\n

The most important thing now, Comley said, is that ticket holders understand their \u201csafety is the priority. People working in the theater and the 41 theater owners and unions have come to a place of solidarity, which is a huge accomplishment and shouldn\u2019t be taken lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHamilton,\u201d \u201cThe Lion King\u201d and \u201cWicked\u201d \u2014 known in inner circles as Broadway\u2019s Big 3 \u2014 are expected to reopen in mid-September. <\/p>\n

As for Comley, \u201cSix: The Musical<\/a>,\u201d a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII presented as a pop concert, will mark her return to a Broadway audience when the show opens officially in October.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to dress up,\u201d she promised, \u201cand put my crown on and celebrate.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
