CHONBURI,\u00a0Thailand, Aug 5 \u2013 The flip flop sound of penguin feet rang out at an empty\u00a0zoo\u00a0in\u00a0Thailand on Thursday as a parade of birds waddled out of their enclosure for their daily splash in a pool to keep them healthy during a COVID-19 lockdown.<\/p>\n

Thailand is fighting its biggest coronavirus outbreak yet and has introduced strict movement curbs that have seen many public places, including\u00a0zoos, shuttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI noticed that they felt a bit confused because when they walk out, there\u2019s usually a lot of people waiting for them,\u201d said Tossapol Kosol, a penguin specialist at the Khao Kheow Open\u00a0Zoo\u00a0just outside Bangkok, the Southeast Asian country\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow when they come out and there\u2019s no one here, they sometimes stop to look around, as if they\u2019re wondering where all the people have gone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Over the last year, Tossapol and his colleagues at the\u00a0zoo\u00a0have had to find ways to exercise the animals despite the lack of\u00a0visitors.<\/p>\n

After feeding the 41\u00a0penguins\u00a055 pounds of mackerel, Tossapol and his colleagues march the\u00a0penguins\u00a0in unison\u00a0down\u00a0a long gangway that leads from their air-conditioned enclosure to an outdoor pool for exercise.<\/p>\n

Zoo\u00a0director Tawin Rattanawongsawat said that although he was unable to accept\u00a0visitors\u00a0\u2013 most of whom would have helped feed the\u00a0penguins\u00a0during normal times \u2013 life at the\u00a0zoo\u00a0had to find a way to carry on, for the welfare of its animals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no\u00a0visitors\u00a0these days, so they\u2019re being fed by their carers instead,\u201d he said. \u201cThey must be wondering why it\u2019s always the same faces, where are the children and their parents?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey must be a bit lonely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
