For some, it\u2019s a once-in-a-lifetime goal to make it to Sturgis; others faithfully make the pilgrimage year after year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a great big family atmosphere, everybody\u2019s out here for the same purpose \u2014 we all love motorcycles,\u201d said Aaron Harper. \u201cIf you\u2019re a motorcyclist, you have to see it at least once in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Public health experts \u2014 and some locals \u2014 worry the rally will again\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/virus-outbreak-ap-top-news-nd-state-wire-sd-state-wire-ne-state-wire-3ea1a021f82fee05736f22138df90ddf\">play host to coronavirus infections,\u00a0<\/a>after hundreds of rallygoers were infected last year. Only about 46% of adults who live in the county that hosts Sturgis are fully vaccinated, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared with 60.6% nationwide.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/science-health-coronavirus-pandemic-south-dakota-sd-state-wire-ce789c500acc30ac385fc0d5c2d8d4cc\">Virus infections are on the rise in South Dakota<\/a>\u00a0after a steady decline through the spring and early summer. One analysis of anonymous cellphone data found that well over half of counties in the country were visited by someone who attended Sturgis. A team of researchers from the Centers for Disease Control\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/73\/Supplement_1\/S106\/6257584\">concluded that last year\u2019s rally<\/a> ended up looking like a \u201csuperspreader event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, the rally is expected to be even bigger. The city held an opening ceremony Friday for the 81st iteration of the event \u2014 something it skipped in 2020 in an attempt to tamp down the crowds.<\/p>\n<p>Jody Perewitz, the rally\u2019s ceremonial grand marshal, said she was \u201cecstatic\u201d to see how many people came for the opening ceremony. Motorcycles stretched for blocks as crowds strolled Main Street, the heart of the rally.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest step city officials took this year to mitigate the risk of infections was allowing rallygoers to drink on public property, with the goal of spreading the crowds into the open air. If you don\u2019t, that\u2019s your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If last year\u2019s rally was marked by defiance of coronavirus precautions, with T-shirts on sale that read, \u201cScrew COVID. I went to Sturgis,\u201d this year the pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared to hardly be an afterthought amid a crowd that embraces the risks and lifestyle of the open road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of that, I don\u2019t worry too much about,\u201d said J.J. Vilella, who said he has not received a COVID-19 vaccine. \u201cIf it happens, it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rally is known as a place where people let loose, strolling the streets in minimal attire and body painting. On Thursday, one woman walked through downtown with a goat on a leash.
