\n Shelly Silver\u2019s \u201ctime has come,\u201d Judge Valerie Caproni said Monday: \u201cHe needs to go to jail.\u201d Will it finally stick?<\/p>\n

Now 76, the former speaker of the state Assembly has dodged prison for five years \u2014 despite admissions such as: \u201cMy use of my office for personal gain was improper, selfish and ethically indefensible,\u201d as he put it this week.<\/p>\n

Convicted in 2015 on extortion, honest-services fraud and money-laundering, he was handed a 12-year sentence \u2014 all overturned on app<\/a>eal. Tried and found guilty again in 2018, he appealed again \u2014 but only got a few charges overturned this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was corruption, pure and simple,\u201d Caproni noted in ordering a $1 million fine and 78 months\u2019 hard time.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe abused his office,\u201d prosecutor Daniel Richenthal said Monday. \u201cHe did it for profit, he did it for at least 15 years, he did it in multiple ways and he lied about it for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet he\u2019s still a free man until at least Aug. 26. Heck, the judge even cited his advanced age as a reason his sentence isn\u2019t longer.<\/p>\n

Justice won\u2019t be served until he actually shows up at a federal penitentiary.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
