A joint training exercise between the US Army and New York\u2019s first responders on Randall\u2019s Island is preparing the Big App<\/a>le for \u201cAmerica\u2019s worst day.\u201d<\/p>\n

And they\u2019re prepping for any scenario \u2014 from a missile attack on Yankee Stadium to a biological weapon attack in the city subway system. <\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody needs to get back to training,\u201d said Col. Chris McKinney, chief of staff of the Army\u2019s Task Force 46. \u201cAnd you see the happiness on the kids\u2019 faces \u2019cause they\u2019re getting to practice their craft, and they\u2019re getting to learn it from the best in the business.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I mean, FDNY, NYPD here \u2014 they\u2019ve done so much stuff,\u201d McKinney said.<\/p>\n

The three-day \u201cDense Urban Terrain Exercise,\u201d which wrapped up Thursday, had city firefighters, NYPD and Port Authority cops working with National Guard troops to prepare for the worst.<\/p>\n

And it starts with everyone speaking the same language.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey speak Army, we speak fire department,\u201d FDNY Battalion Chief Edward Ryan said. \u201cSo, by training together we get to understand each other\u2019s lingo.<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle things, like we have what we call a FAST Team, which is firefighter assist team,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cThey call (it) a RIT, or rapid intervention team. Same basic idea, different terminology. So, by doing that today, I now know if I hear that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The training exercises, including rapid response to a subway attack, aren\u2019t all that far-fetched, particularly after what the city endured on Sept. 11, 2001. <\/p>\n

In 2018, an accidental steam pipe explosion in the subway system spread asbestos in the tunnels and forced the evacuation of 50 Midtown buildings. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s relationships, right?\u201d McKinney said of the training. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to bring credibility and trust to the table. And that\u2019s something that\u2019s near and dear to our hearts with these partners. Should we ever have to respond \u2014 and that\u2019s why we train \u2014 we need to know what we\u2019re doing, we need to know how to plug in to support a city.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
