Eric Adams promises that if elected, he\u2019ll bring back a better version of the NYPD\u2019s anti-crime unit, which focused on getting guns off the streets. Yet if Portland is any example, he might not be able to bring back any <\/em>such unit.<\/p>\n

As The Wall Street Journal reported <\/a>last week, the West Coast city\u2019s police force is trying to resurrect its own Gun Violence Reduction Team, which was scrapp<\/a>ed last year amid the anti-police protests, but can\u2019t find enough officers: Since May, when it announced 14 openings, it\u2019s gotten only four applications. No one\u2019s yet been assigned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re demonizing and vilifying you, and then they want to put you in a unit where you\u2019re under an even bigger microscope,\u201d scoffs Portland police-union president Daryl Turner.<\/p>\n

Portland isn\u2019t alone in having trouble finding cops. Indeed, many cities are discovering the fierce anti-police climate the left created has sparked a severe cop shortage.<\/p>\n

The Manhattan Institute\u2019s Heather Mac Donald raised the alarm\u00a0last month when she noted that departments nationwide are struggling to grow their ranks \u201cnot because they lack funding, but because they face a recruitment crisis\u201d \u2014 the result of a negative \u201cnarrative about policing promulgated by Democrats.\u201d She cited police-manpower issues in Portland; Seattle; Asheville, NC; and Riverside, Ill. <\/p>\n

San Francisco Police Officers Association chief Tony Montoya also laments that patrol strength dropped due to early retirements and resignations.\u00a0Officers \u201cdon\u2019t feel supported\u201d by officials, he explained. In New York, Rensselaer County\u2019s sheriff\u2019s office recently saw a drop in applications for its civil-service exam, meaning fewer qualified cops down the road. Even in Gotham, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea tells The Post events \u201ccontinue to present challenges to recruitment efforts.\u201d <\/p>\n
