LAS VEGAS \u2014 Little over a week ago, the Nets drafted one of the most prolific freshman scorers in a generation. Monday, he\u2019ll get his first chance to score on professionals, when Cam Thomas and the Nets tip off summer league.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like the trend for me is going up, because I feel like I get better day by day. So, just can\u2019t wait. Can\u2019t wait to play [Monday],\u201d Thomas told The Post after Sunday\u2019s practice, the team\u2019s last before facing Memphis on Monday.<\/p>\n

Thomas, the ninth-ranked prospect on Bleacher Report\u2019s Big Board, fell to the Nets at No. 27. Despite having the Big 3, they snapp<\/a>ed up the LSU guard.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old showed some flashes of his offensive ability over his first four professional practices, but Monday he\u2019ll get a test against defenders wearing a different uniform.<\/p>\n

\u201cCam, his ability to create his own shot is evident at this level. He\u2019s crafty, he\u2019s got a bunch of fakes, he\u2019ll be able to draw fouls,\u201d Nets summer league coach Jordan Ott told The Post. \u201cObviously a really good aggressive scorer. You\u2019re able to see it more and more each day. He\u2019s started to feel more comfortable every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas was the first freshman to lead the SEC in scoring since 1989. And he joined Kevin Durant, Trae Young, Michael Beasley and Markelle Fultz as the only major college freshmen to average at least 23 points since 1992-93.<\/p>\n

Most encouraging, Thomas has shown a penchant for raising his game<\/a> to the level of his foes. He\u2019s just the third freshman to drop 57 points through his first two NCAA tourney games. The others? Durant and Zion Williamson.<\/p>\n

Granted, his efficiency (32.5 percent from 3) was hindered by his shot selection.<\/p>\n

While Thomas said he\u2019ll get far more open looks playing alongside superstars like the Big 3 than he ever did in college, the process-oriented perfectionist knows that shot selection will have to improve, starting this week in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt 19 years old, you can score the basketball like that, being that skilled you can tell he\u2019s put some time in the gym. He\u2019s business,\u201d said Ott. \u201cHe\u2019s more of a quiet personality; but that\u2019s because he\u2019s here for basketball.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very engaging, asked great questions, very curious on what we do in Brooklyn. \u2026 He\u2019s here for the right reasons and you can tell right away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those kind of improvements are what summer league is for, and Thomas is taking advantage of the time by being a sponge, soaking up knowledge from the likes of Brandon Knight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the new guy here. Brandon Knight \u2014 for him being the No. 8 pick, the experience he\u2019s had \u2014 he\u2019s done a great job taking me under his wing, and I respect him for that. That\u2019s my guy,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cSo just happy to have somebody with that much experience with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

At 29 with eight pro seasons under his belt, Knight has been passing that experience on to Thomas. He\u2019s also suitably impressed with the rookie\u2019s scoring touch.<\/p>\n

\u201cCam, you know he can score even in this setting. You know he can score always,\u201d Knight said. \u201cCam hit me with some questions, too; so that was good. I\u2019m going to talk to him for a little bit. \u2026 I want to make these kids better. I want to help them be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas has a businesslike approach that belies his age. Part of that comes from his single mother Leslie, an Army vet who instilled discipline. Much is from having watched the late Kobe Bryant, and trying to emulate his Mamba Mentality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really got that from Kobe, just watching how serious he was and how he took his craft very seriously. When my mom saw that I wanted to play very seriously, she stayed on me and kept me focused,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cSo I really got that from Kobe, just all-business, lock in. Do your work first. \u2026 Perfection is all that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
