In what probably comes as no surprise to many people, Tesla has just quietly confirmed that its electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck, is delayed to 2022. This comes after months of hinting at a possible production delay, but hopefully, it won\u2019t be for too long.<\/p>\n

When we say quietly confirmed the news<\/a>, we mean it. Instead of any announcement or post on Twitter<\/a> by Elon Musk, the company simply changed the\u00a0configuration <\/a>web page\u2019s wording. Those trying to order a Tesla Cybertruck will now see that \u201cproductions nears in 2022\u201d. As of now, we don\u2019t know when production will actually start.<\/p>\n

When Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck back in 2019 to much fanfare, it said that the electric pickup truck would make it to market by the end of 2021. That was already somewhat of a stretch considering everything else Tesla has going on. Now we can confirm that production won\u2019t even start until 2022, which means deliveries will take even longer.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Tesla Model Y is getting all the attention at its new giga-factory in Texas, which is part of the problem as the Cybertruck will begin production after<\/em> the Model Y. For what it\u2019s worth, the company only expected a few deliveries in late 2021 with production fully ramping up in 2022, so again, this isn\u2019t much of a surprise.<\/p>\n

Part of the delay could also be due to a few design changes Musk announced back in 2020. However, that\u2019s not too big of a concern considering several other electric truck manufacturers face similar hurdles or push back launch dates. For example, Rivian, with its R1T truck, delayed the release date once, then recently announced the release date got delayed from July to September of 2021.<\/p>\n

The only potential issue is now Tesla faces more competition as the GMC Hummer EV is coming later this year, with production starting any day now, and Ford\u2019s exciting F-150 Lightning will hit the streets in Spring 2022.<\/p>\n

With over one million pre-orders for the Cybertruck, Tesla shouldn\u2019t worry too much, but now early adopters have to wait a little longer to get their cyberpunk-inspired electric pickup.<\/p>\n
