“#NY Assembly had discussions about Cuomo book deal: sources<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The New York state Assembly\u2019s Judiciary Committee on Monday had \u201cdetailed discussions\u201d\u00a0with its\u00a0outside lawyers about Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s $5.1 million book deal \u2014 and it could spell trouble for former top aide Melissa DeRosa, sources told The Post.<\/p>\n

The committee has been probing whether Cuomo\u00a0improperly used state resources\u00a0to write his memoir, \u201cAmerican Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic<\/a>,\u201d as part of its impeachment inquiry into the three-term Democrat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no question that the lawyers have evidence about using taxpayer resources to prepare the manuscript<\/a>,\u201d a source close to the assembly probe said.<\/p>\n

The evidence in question, according to the source, includes emails from DeRosa about \u201cinstructions she gave to the staff in the governor\u2019s office to help with the manuscript for Cuomo\u2019s book being pitched to publishers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey clearly have evidence and interviews with staff about Melissa DeRosa instructing them to help with the manuscript,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

DeRosa, 38,\u00a0resigned Sunday night\u00a0amid criticism over her attempts to discredit the governor\u2019s accusers, detailed in state Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James\u2019 scathing report on Cuomo\u2019s alleged sexual harassment of several women.<\/p>\n

Reports\u00a0in March\u00a0said that DeRosa and fellow top aide Stephanie Benton, as well as junior staffers, assisted the governor with his memoir, which was published in mid-October.<\/p>\n

Crown Publishing\u00a0has since paused promotion\u00a0of \u201cAmerican Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic\u201d because of a federal investigation into the Cuomo administration\u2019s handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes, which the impeachment inquiry also covers.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the publishers expressed amazement that the governor had the time to prepare a manuscript in the middle of the COVID crisis,\u201d the source said Monday.<\/p>\n

A second source close to\u00a0the\u00a0Judiciary Committee said it will be simple to determine whether there was any wrongdoing when it comes to Cuomo\u2019s book deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely came up. Either you did or didn\u2019t do it. There was talking about staff working around the clock and on weekends\u2026,\u201d the source said. \u201cOur lawyers (on the Judiciary Committee) are pursuing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-The Bronx)\u00a0on Monday said\u00a0the committee plans to wrap up its impeachment investigation \u201cwith all due haste\u201d in the wake of James\u2019 explosive report.\u00a0He would not commit to a timeline for a vote, but said the articles of impeachment would be drafted in the next few weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Lavine (D-Nassau) also said that the wide-ranging investigation by the committee\u2019s outside lawyers was continuing into other allegations against Cuomo, including relating to his pandemic memoir.<\/p>\n

Assembly David Weprin (D-Queens), who is on the Judiciary Committee, also said there was \u201cno question\u201d the outside lawyers were looking into whether Cuomo used state workers to help prepare and promote his memoir.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s government 101. You can\u2019t do non-government work on government time,\u201d Weprin told The Post.\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s stuff our lawyers are looking at. No question.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both James\u2019 office and\u00a0the Brooklyn US Attorney\u2019s Office\u00a0are also probing the book deal.<\/p>\n

Spokesman Rich Azzopardi\u00a0has previously said\u00a0that \u201cthe idea there was criminality involved here is patently absurd on its face and is just the furthering of a political pile-on.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement Monday, Azzopardi added: \u201cAs I previously said, any state official who volunteered to assist on this project did so on his or her own time and without the use of state resources. To the extent a document was printed, it was incidental.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
