“#GOP drafts resolution to block female military draft push<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A group of Republican senators have drafted a plan to block a push to compel women to register for the draft upon turning 18 \u2014 dubbing it the \u201cDon\u2019t Draft Our Daughter\u2019s\u201d resolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen have heroically served in and alongside America\u2019s fighting forces since our nation\u2019s founding. It\u2019s one thing to allow American women to choose this life, it\u2019s quite another to force it upon our daughters, sisters, and wives,\u201d Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The resolution is being introduced by six GOP senators: Mike Lee (R-UT), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Josh Hawley (R-MO), James Lankford (R-OK), Steve Daines (R-MT) and Roger Wicker (R-MS).<\/p>\n

The \u200bSenate National Defense Authorization Act, app<\/a>roved by the Senate Armed Services Committee last month, includes an amendment that would for the first time force women between the ages of 18 to 25 to sign up for the Selected Service.<\/p>\n

Men of that age are currently required to do so. Those that don\u2019t are ineligible for federal student loans and can\u2019t land government jobs.<\/p>\n

In introducing the \u201cDon\u2019t Draft Our Daughter\u2019s\u201d resolution, the GOP lawmakers also noted that women tend to score lower on military physical fitness exams.<\/p>\n

The language states that \u201conly a small subset of women are able to meet the physical fitness requirements for combat roles.\u201d <\/p>\n

Proponents of the resolution stressed that they supported the right of women to join the military but opposed making draft registration mandatory.<\/p>\n

\u201cForcing our daughters into the draft creates a burdensome and disproportionately increased risk of injury and fatalities for our nation\u2019s women, as readiness data shows,\u201d Sen. Lee said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis policy change is rushed and unnecessary in our current time of peace, and unduly harms women more than advancing any notion of equality. While American women should be empowered to serve in our Armed Forces, they should not be forced to fight.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ria Tabacco Mar, head of the American Civil Liberties Union\u2019s Women\u2019s Rights Project, has countered that the status quo creates a \u201cserious burden on men that\u2019s not being imposed on women.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said it sends a \u201ctremendously harmful message that women are less fit than men to serve their country in this particular way and conversely that men are less fit than women to stay home as caregivers in the event of an armed conflict.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
