\n An attorney representing Ghislaine Maxwell, the accused accomplice and ex-girlfriend of late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, asked a judge presiding over her sex crimes case to impose a pretrial gag order to protect the social<\/a>ite\u2019s chances of a fair trial.<\/p>\n

In a letter filed Tuesday in Manhattan federal court, the lawyer, Jeffrey Pagliuca, cited public comments made by Acting US Attorney Audrey Strauss, the head of New York\u2019s FBI office and lawyers for Maxwell\u2019s accusers.<\/p>\n

The comments, he said, show that an order is necessary to prevent \u201cprejudicial pretrial publicity by the government, its agents, and lawyers for alleged witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n

He specifically pointed to comments made at a news<\/a> conference by William Sweeney, head of New York\u2019s FBI office, who referenced Maxwell as \u201cone of the villains in this investigation\u201d and compared her to a snake that \u201cslithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire.\u201d Maxwell was arrested at the property in Bradford on July 2.<\/p>\n

Through a spokesman, prosecutors declined to comment on the gag order request.<\/p>\n

The request was filed the same day President Donald Trump replied, \u201cI just wish her well, frankly,\u201d when questioned about Maxwell.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach and I guess they lived in Palm Beach, but I wish her well,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

Maxwell, 58, was arrested on a six-count indictment charging her with grooming young girls for sex.<\/p>\n

The charges stem from Maxwell\u2019s role \u201cin the sexual exploitation and abuse of multiple minor girls by Jeffrey Epstein\u201d as early as 1994, court papers say.<\/p>\n

She is expected to spend a year awaiting trial at the Brooklyn Detention Center, where she has been held since shortly after her arrest.<\/p>\n

Her arrest came almost a year after Epstein was busted on federal sex trafficking charges on July 6, 2019.<\/p>\n

He committed suicide in August a day after some 2,000 court documents were unsealed in a related civil case, revealing details of his alleged sex ring.<\/p>\n
