Women allegedly victimized by Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the resignation of his \u201cenabler-in-chief\u201d Melissa DeRosa a cowardly move Monday after the top aide announced her sudden departure amid criticism over her attempts to discredit the governor\u2019s accusers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. DeRosa was Cuomo\u2019s enabler-in-chief and is jumping ship only when she sees no other way to save herself,\u201d Alyssa McGrath and Virginia Limmiatis, two of the 11 women who Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James found were sexually harassed by the governor, said through their attorney Mariann Wang.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHer resignation isn\u2019t enough: she still refuses to take responsibility for her role in Cuomo\u2019s unlawful conduct,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n

DeRosa, 38, released a short statement Sunday night announcing she\u2019d be stepping down from her post as secretary to the governor, the state\u2019s highest-ranking app<\/a>ointed position, after James\u2019 investigation revealed DeRosa played an active role in dismissing and discrediting the governor\u2019s accusers.\u00a0Cuomo has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. <\/p>\n

The statement didn\u2019t mention the scandal or offer an apology and only noted the last two years had \u201cbeen emotionally and mentally trying\u201d and it was \u201cthe greatest honor\u201d of her \u201clife\u201d to work for New Yorkers \u2014 an \u201copportunity\u201d she\u2019s \u201cforever grateful\u201d to have had.<\/p>\n

Nowhere in James\u2019 report does it state that DeRosa made any attempts to discredit McGrath or Limmiatis, but she did admit to leaking the personnel file of Cuomo\u2019s first accuser, Lindsey Boylan, as a means to discredit her accusations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DeRosa also played a part in circulating a proposed op-ed, originally drafted by Cuomo, that contained \u201cpersonal and professional attacks\u201d on Boylan, and worked to shield the governor from complaints made by former staffer Charlotte Bennett.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bennett and Boylan didn\u2019t return requests for comment, nor did the other accusers listed in James\u2019 report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Karen Hinton, who was not a primary accuser in James\u2019 report but previously revealed Cuomo gave her an inappropriate hug in 2000, said DeRosa should\u2019ve \u201capologized\u201d in the statement and acknowledged the pain the governor\u2019s accusers have gone through.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe should have apologized, at the very least, for her own sanity as well as on behalf of the 11 women who\u2019ve spoken out against the governor,\u201d Hinton told The Post by phone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think when you\u2019re an enabler, to recover from that experience, you have to apologize and reckon with what you\u2019ve done to move on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hinton, a former press aide to Cuomo when he served as federal housing secretary under President Bill Clinton, said DeRosa\u2019s statement \u201cappeared to be hastily written without much thought.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a communications expert, so I think it was written out from stress, from anxiety, from nerves, and she wanted to push away quickly, but she needs to come back and apologize and acknowledge what she went through,\u201d Hinton said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe her resignation was in response to a series<\/a> of critical news<\/a> articles being written about her \u2026 the stress on her has become so heavy that she has to remove herself from the defense that\u2019s underway now,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hinton said DeRosa and her attorney are likely being very careful about commenting because she \u201ccould be brought up on [civil] charges\u201d and any public acknowledgment of guilt or remorse could be used against her down the line.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DeRosa didn\u2019t return a request for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
