The WWE Hall of Famer, now working for All Elite Wrestling as an analyst and coach, will get his first crack as a commentator when “AEW Rampage” debuts on Friday (10 p.m., TNT). He will be joined in the booth by Excalibur, Taz and Chris Jericho for the show that will feature a women’s championship match between Dr. Britt Baker and Red Velvet. Before the debut, Henry took time for some Q&A with The Post’s Joseph Staszewski.

(Edited for clarity and length)

Q: You signed with AEW in late May. Now that we are approaching the debut of ‘Rampage,’ how are you feeling with it being so close?

A: I’m excited. I’ve been excited. I don’t think that AEW realizes what’s about to happen. I’ve never been at a loss for words. I’ve loved every microphone I’ve even been in front of and I want to have a good time in pro wrestling. I think it’s needed, it’s wanted. There are enough people on the panel that can explain the Xs and Os, the ins and outs, the names of maneuvers. But explaining why something is happening, giving you a colorful analysis of what that is, is what I’m gonna bring to the table. I’m a really, really country Texas guy and a little colloquialism will come out and I think people are gonna like it.

Q: You said during your “AEW: Unrestricted” interview that you would do some commentary backstage when you were wrestling. What did those entail and why did commentary appeal to you so much?

A: It was actually something that a lot of us did just to entertain ourselves. It started off me and a couple other guys that are high-level name guys and we would just sit at the monitor and call the matches and entertain everybody, make everybody laugh around us. Every now and then something would be like, (starts commentary voice) “He’s going to the top. I hope he don’t get a nose bleed out there. We do have issues about blood now. You can’t just bleed all over the place. He hit him with that thing.” Then he goes, “What thing?” “That move, that flying burrito” Just naming stuff that’s not even a real thing, just having a good time.

Mark Henry debuts on “AEW Dynamite” in May.

All Elite Wrestling

Q: Did you have any regulars that would be there all the time?

A: You know I have, but I don’t work with these guys anymore. How did that go and was there something you identified that, ‘Hey, I need to work on this’ or was it more polishing some things over?

A: It was more polishing some stuff. There was a guy, he has an unbelievable haircut. If you ever tune into AEW, he looks like Goku from “Dragon Ball Z.” He’s got his hair and I’m like, there’s that kid Pantene standing there. And Tony just spits his drink out. He was like, “You called him Pantene?” I said, “Look at that hair. That’s a hair commercial waiting to happen.” We just laughed. We were having fun. Tony was like, “don’t change.” Nobody does that in wrestling.

Q: Where did the idea for the four-man booth for “Rampage” come from and what challenges does that bring for you when you’re doing this for the first time?

A: I’m the new guy. They already have a great relationship and they can put on a great show. I think it’s a safety mechanism. I think just in case that I get on there and I’m not good, (AEW president) Tony (Khan) had to put the safety mechanism in place and throw Chris (Jericho) out there just in case we have to save this thing. I don’t think he has that to worry about. I think we’ll start off a four-man booth and I think once they realize that I can handle it we’ll go to a traditional three-man booth.

Mark Henry and Tony Schiavone

All Elite Wrestling

A: How do you make “Rampage” not feel like the B show or the lesser show like we’ve seen happen with “Thunder” in WCW and at times “SmackDown” was that way in WWE? How do you keep that from happening with this show?

Q: The way you do it is with talent. The better content you have the better things that can be said about it. I’m not gonna dummy it down if I see something that’s not good. This is something that I’ll put my coach’s cap on and I’m gonna have to pull that guy and that girl aside and tell them that, “Hey, you got to do better.” That’s a style of analysis that you don’t get on traditional wrestling because nobody’s doing double roles, triple roles. They want to hear our opinion. I will preface it, what I’m saying is my opinion. When I have a hard take, it’s gonna be this is opinion or the facts speak for themselves.

Q: You talked about your coaching role. You had a hand in bringing Bianca Belair and Braun Strowman to WWE, and now Jade Cargill in AEW. When you see these athletes who are not wrestlers, what do you look for? What do you see that makes you go, “Hey, I think this person can do it?”

A: Have you ever walked in a room and somebody walks in. You are talking to your buddy, you’re talking to your wife, you’re talking to a friend and somebody walks in and everybody starts turning, going “Who’s that?” Some people just have this, they say je ne sais quoi. I always say they have the star factor and I would rather find somebody with the star factor that’s an athlete and make them a wrestler because that’s what happened with me.

Q: Why do you think this kind of opportunity just didn’t happen for you in WWE as a full-time coach or producer?

A: WWE has been tried and true for so many years because they’re an older company. They have 50 years. It’s experience-based. They hire people who can do the job, usually, and I didn’t have any experience doing that. So, it’s only fitting that I got to a young company that needs somebody who wants to do it and is not afraid, is never gonna crack when they turn the camera on. It was tailor-made. And AEW’s product, I don’t know if you’ve watched the product over the past two months, but it’s a better show. It’s a really exciting show. You look up and you go, “Oh man, the show’s going off?” You lose track of time and that’s what wrestling is supposed to do to you, suspend belief, make you laugh, make you mad, make you call your friend and go, “Did you see what he did?”

Q: When you say that, what has allowed that to happen and what’s been the difference philosophy wise working backstage in AEW to what was going on in WWE in your years there?

A: Pro wrestling is the ultimate improvisational business, but it’s also a business where you have to be able to entertain on the fly. It’s the original Broadway, it’s the original high pantomime show. You use your body to express what you say in words, your reactions, your facials, your inflection in your voice, everything. I think that AEW is allowing the talent to do that without micromanaging it and when you have passion and you have an artistic nature and you’re allowed to let that come out, then you get individuals. You don’t get cookie-cutter, stamp, stamp, stamp. And it gets old, and because you have a fresh idea in every match, you don’t get the same thing over and over.

Q: You have worked with CM Punk and Daniel Bryan. What would adding them to any wrestling company not named WWE do or mean for that company?

A: I think it would be great for the companies because you have unbelievable talent and two of the more master psychologists that I’ve worked with, guys that you sit down and you think, what’s not being done in pro wrestling? When you have a mindset of, “I want to do something everybody else don’t do,” then automatically you are ahead of the game. You already have everybody. They’re gonna be on edge because once they see something they haven’t seen in years and it was really, really cool and you see someone who is well established and it’s gonna get over.

Q: What’s your mindset about getting back in the ring?

A: I got to get in wrestling condition. I walked up two flights of stairs the other day and it felt like somebody had put gasoline in my lungs. It would have to be the right person, one, and the right situation and ultimately what is it gonna add to the business? If it’s gonna be ho-hum like, “Oh, Mark Henry is just having his last match,” I don’t want to do that. It’s got to mean something.

Q: Do you have any AEW talent in general that’s caught your eye?

A: “All Ego” Ethan Page, he’s somebody I feel like people will really enjoy seeing me in the ring with. Ricky Starks, people would love that. I think to walk out and shut MJF up would be something people would be really, really excited to see because they know that if I did, there’s Wardlow there. They have a faction that could help protect him, but when I come into play, it don’t matter if you’re a faction or not. I’ll take everybody. It’s gonna have to be the right situation.

Q: Do you have a favorite version of you from WWE that was the most fun or represented you the best?

A: I think that the Hall of Pain era, when I started to become an old enough guy people starting calling me and saying, “Hey man, we’re thinking about bringing you into our hall of fame” and I went into the International Sports Hall of Fame. I went into the Wall of Honor at my high school. I got inducted into the Cauliflower Alley Hall of Fame and it just kept going, then the WWE Hall of Fame, then I went into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Somebody one day during the Hall of Pain era, I can’t remember who it was I was talking to, and they referenced Randy Orton and I was like, “I’m gonna put his ass in the hall of pain.” It was one of those impromptu, kind of accidental success phrases. And that’s what happens with guys like me or a Daniel or Punk, stuff by accident happens impromptu and just organically it works because it’s passion and has an educated feel to it. The Hall of Pain Mark Henry, is a reality. It’s not owned by anybody.

Q: When you see the cuts that have gone on in WWE (prior to last week’s NXT cuts) and AEW benefitting from being able to bring in Malakai Black and Andrade, what does that signal to you, having been in WWE, as far as what their thinking is? And is it a chance for AEW to continue to capitalize on underused or under-pushed talent and give them this new platform?

A: I look at it like any other business, any other Fortune 500 company. We have elite talent in the business that you’re in and there are other companies, whether it’s WWE or New Japan or Impact, wherever it is. People are gonna leave those jobs and stay in the same industry. So why not go somewhere you can go and put your stamp of approval on something and make that work? It has nothing to do with the other company. The other company is irrelevant at that point. It’s about your individual talent.

Talent is gonna rise to the top every time. It doesn’t matter what you did before. People ask for their releases so they can go and do what they feel like is more them than what the company is providing.

If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
