NASA\u2019s\u00a0Perseverance\u00a0Mars\u00a0rover has stumbled into an issue during its first sampling attempt.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c#SamplingMars is one of my most complicated tasks. Early pics and data show a successful drill hole, but no sample in the tube\u2013something we\u2019ve never seen in testing on Earth,\u201d the rover\u2019s Twitter<\/a> account announced on Friday. \u201cMars keeps surprising us. We\u2019re working through this new challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a release from the agency<\/a>, the Southern California-based Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) which leads the mission wrote that data sent back to\u00a0Earth\u00a0after Perseverance\u2019s first\u00a0rock\u00a0sampling attempt indicated \u201cno rock was collected.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a02,260-pound rover<\/a>\u00a0carries 43 titanium sample tubes in its mission to search for interesting rocks and sediment \u2013 potentially leading to signs of\u00a0ancient microbial life<\/a>\u00a0on the red planet \u2013 and is exploring Jezero Crater: the region where it first landed in February.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile this is not the \u2018hole-in-one\u2019 we hoped for, there is always risk with breaking new ground,\u201d Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA\u2019s Science<\/a> Mission Directorate in Washington, D.C., said in a statement. \u201cI\u2019m confident we have the right team working this, and we will persevere toward a solution to ensure future success.\u201d<\/p>\n

JPL notes that Perseverance\u2019s Sampling and Caching System uses a \u201chollow coring bit and a percussive drill\u201d at the end of its long\u00a0robotic arm<\/a>\u00a0to extract the samples.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The drill and bit were engaged as planned during its first attempt and the sample tube was processed as was intended.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the steps that occurs after placing a probe into the collection tube is to measure the volume of the sample,\u201d Perseverance surface mission manager Jessica Samuels explained further. \u201cThe probe did not encounter the expected resistance that would be there if a sample were inside the tube.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Perseverance team is working to create a response team to analyze the data, including snapp<\/a>ing close-up shots of the borehole with the robotic arm\u2019s WATSON (Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering) camera.<\/p>\n

The rover is looking at two units in the area containing the crater\u2019s \u201cdeepest and most ancient layers of exposed bedrock,\u201d named the \u201cCrater Floor Fractured Rough\u201d and \u201cS\u00e9\u00edtah.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the \u201cCrater Floor Fractured Rough\u201d is on the crater\u2019s floor, \u201cS\u00e9\u00edtah\u201d has ridges, layered rocks and sand dunes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe initial thinking is that the empty tube is more likely a result of the rock target not reacting the way we expected during coring, and less likely a hardware issue with the Sampling and Caching System,\u201d Jennifer Trosper, project manager for Perseverance at JPL, said. \u201cOver the next few days, the team will be spending more time analyzing the data we have, and also acquiring some additional diagnostic data to support understanding the root cause for the empty tube.\u201d<\/p>\n

JPL noted that previous NASA missions on Mars have \u201cencountered surprising rock and regolith properties during sample collection and other activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agency hopes to fill up eight of its sample tubes before Perseverance returns to its landing site and readies to journey to Jezero Crater\u2019s delta region for its second\u00a0science campaign<\/a>.\n <\/div>\n
