{"id":321211,"date":"2021-08-10T23:21:31","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T20:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/common-flower-is-first-carnivorous-plant-in-20-years\/"},"modified":"2021-08-10T23:21:31","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T20:21:31","slug":"common-flower-is-first-carnivorous-plant-in-20-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/common-flower-is-first-carnivorous-plant-in-20-years\/","title":{"rendered":"#Common flower is first carnivorous plant in 20 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Common flower is first carnivorous plant in 20 years<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>There\u2019s a new flesh-eating flower in the plant kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>The carnivorous cutie is the first of its kind identified in 20 years \u2014 despite the white flower\u2019s prevalence throughout the Pacific Northwest. <\/p>\n<p>Sean Graham, a botanist with the University of British Columbia, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/08\/09\/1026091196\/this-sweet-white-flower-is-actually-a-sneaky-carnivore-scientists-discovered\">told NPR<\/a>, \u201cWe had no idea it was carnivorous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flower, called a western false asphodel, was first documented in 1879, but scientists had no idea the plant consumed meat until now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not found in some exotic tropical location, but really right on our doorstep in Vancouver,\u201d Graham added. \u201cYou could literally walk out from Vancouver to this field site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers had been working on an unrelated study when they noticed the asphodel, <em>Triantha occidentalis<\/em>, exhibited a genetic deletion that\u2019s seen in other carnivorous plants. Scientists also noted that the flower had features which could be used to trap food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then they have these sticky stems,\u201d explained Graham, whose study on the western white asphodel was published Monday <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/33\/e2022724118\">by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a>. \u201cSo, you know, it was kind of like, hmm, I wonder if this could be a sign that this might be carnivorous.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"&quot;I suspect, that there might be more carnivorous plants out there than we think,&quot; said Sean Graham.\" class=\"wp-image-19084555 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/triantha-occidentalis-003.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/triantha-occidentalis-003.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/triantha-occidentalis-003.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/triantha-occidentalis-003.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/triantha-occidentalis-003.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>\u201cI suspect that there might be more carnivorous plants out there than we think,\u201d said botanist Sean Graham.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Qianshi Lin<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are less than 1,000 known species of carnivorous plants, which often <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear in sunny and wet climates, with a soil that is scarce in nutrients \u2014 thus their evolution towards eating meat. <\/p>\n<p>To prove the flowers were drawing nutrients from insects, researchers tracked the <em>Triantha<\/em> plant\u2019s uptake of nitrogen-15 isotopes that began in laboratory fruit flies, which scientists had placed on the plant\u2019s sticky stem. <\/p>\n<p>Results showed that half of the plant\u2019s nitrogen composition after feeding had come from the flies. <\/p>\n<p>They additionally discovered that tiny hairs on the stem produce a digestive enzyme found in other carnivorous plants.
