colonialism.<\/p>\n<p>A viral April Instagram post from Chaheti Bansal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rootedinspice\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=583c74d2-5070-416e-aaa1-037076c030cb\">on her Rooted in Spice page<\/a> sparked a debate over the word\u2019s usage to describe dishes of different tastes from various regions of South Asia and has been widely recirculated in recent <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not even gonna bother with the recipe in this voiceover cause I have more important things to discuss like canceling the word \u2018curry,\u2019 \u201d she says in the post, accompanying a video of her cooking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK, not in all cultures \u2013 but specifically in Indian cuisine cause I don\u2019t understand what that word means,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike there\u2019s a saying that the food in India changes every 100 kilometers and yet we\u2019re still using this umbrella term popularized by white people who couldn\u2019t be bothered to learn the actual names of our dishes \u2013 but we can still unlearn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201ccurry\u201d likely originated from British colonists who were mispronouncing something else \u2013 although it\u2019s not clear what exactly they were mispronouncing.<\/p>\n<div language to my knowledge,\u201d University of Vermont Professor Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/it-s-not-always-curry-desi-cooks-call-change-western-n1275855\">told NBC News<\/a>. \u201cCurry is one of these words that most historians attribute to the British bad ear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White people wanted South Asian food but not overly spiced or \u201csmelly,\u201d the professor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that lack of temperance, in our food, or in our emotionality, is a problem,\u201d she told NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the things that is rooted in white, Christian supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bansal told NBC she doesn\u2019t want to completely strike \u201ccurry\u201d from the record and it is often correct for certain South Asian dishes \u2013 she is just aiming for some nuance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurry shouldn\u2019t be all that you think about when you think about South Asian food,\u201d she said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>But that hasn\u2019t stopped some people from pushing back on the movement. \u201cI lost the will to live as soon as we started talking about it,\u201d British TV host Simon McCoy <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"
