\n Google said it has fixed a \u201cbug\u201d that led to several conservative websites disapp<\/a>earing from its search results on Tuesday but a former engineer for the tech giant said the glitch may have inadvertently exposed an internal list that targeted certain news<\/a> outlets.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt appears to have revealed the existence of another blacklist that disproportionately targets conservatives,\u201d Mike Wacker said in a message to the website \u201cMedia<\/a>ite.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe glitch is that sites on this blacklist disappeared from Google search results, but the existence of the list is very much by design. And that raises a major question: Why was this blacklist created in the first place, and what else is it used for?\u201d Wacker questioned.<\/p>\n

For several hours Tuesday morning and early afternoon, users couldn\u2019t access a number of websites on Google search, including Breitbart, the Drudge Report, the Bongino Report and the National Pulse.<\/p>\n

Occupy Democrats, a left-wing populist website, also vanished, but the New York Times and the Washington Post did not appear to be affected.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we became aware of an issue that impacted some navigational and site: operator searches. We investigated & have since fixed the bug,\u201d Google said in a statement on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cContrary to some speculation, this did not target particular sites or political ideologies. Today\u2019s issue affected sites representing a range of content and different viewpoints,\u201d it continued. \u201cOur ranking systems don\u2019t index, rank or classify content based on political lean, as we\u2019ve explained in our How Search Works site.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Dr. Robert Epstein, who has studied Google\u2019s influence on elections, agreed with Wacker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s likely that a person or algorithm at Google added \u2018breitbart.com\u2019 and other URLs to one or more of the company\u2019s blacklists,\u201d Epstein told Mediaite. \u201cThen, perhaps after some pushback, someone pulled those URLs off the blacklists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wacker, who was fired by Google in June 2019 after he wrote an article claiming \u201coutrage mobs and witch hunts dominate its culture,\u201d said the sites on the blacklist \u201care being penalized.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the glitch was that the penalty was accidentally set so high that these sites were effectively removed from Google search,\u201d Wacker said. \u201cI\u2019ve found that a lot of people tend to conflate algorithms with AI since they\u2019re both automated, but AI isn\u2019t as objective and mechanical as algorithms are.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
