ARDALES,\u00a0Spain, Aug 8 \u2013\u00a0Neanderthals\u00a0may have been closer to our species of\u00a0prehistoric\u00a0modern human than previously believed after\u00a0cave\u00a0paintings\u00a0found in\u00a0Spain\u00a0proved they had a fondness for creating art, one of the authors of a new scientific report said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Red ochre pigment discovered on stalagmites in the\u00a0Caves of Ardales, near Malaga in southern\u00a0Spain,\u00a0were\u00a0created by\u00a0Neanderthals\u00a0about 65,000 years ago, making them possibly the first\u00a0artists\u00a0on earth, according to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science<\/a>s (PNAS) journal.<\/p>\n

Modern humans\u00a0were\u00a0not inhabiting Europe at the time the\u00a0cave\u00a0images\u00a0were\u00a0made.<\/p>\n

The new findings add to increasing evidence that\u00a0Neanderthals, whose lineage became extinct about 40,000 years ago,\u00a0were\u00a0not the unsophisticated relatives of Homo sapiens they had long been portrayed as.<\/p>\n

Pigments\u00a0were\u00a0made in the\u00a0caves at different times up to 15,000 and 20,000 years apart, the study found, and dispel an earlier suggestion that they\u00a0were\u00a0the result of a natural oxide flow rather than being man-made.<\/p>\n

Joao Zilhao, one of the authors of the PNAS study, said dating techniques\u00a0showed that ochre had been spat by\u00a0Neanderthals\u00a0onto the stalagmites, possibly as part of a ritual.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe importance is that it changes our attitude towards\u00a0Neanderthals. They\u00a0were\u00a0closer to humans. Recent research has\u00a0shown they liked objects, they mated with humans and now we can\u00a0show\u00a0that they painted\u00a0caves like us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

all\u00a0paintings\u00a0made by\u00a0prehistoric\u00a0modern humans, such as those found in the Chauvet-Pont d\u2019Arc\u00a0cave\u00a0of France, are more than 30,000 years old.<\/p>\n
