Conservative: \u2018Worse Than Trump\u2019 Phase Is Here<\/strong><\/p>\n

At National Review, Charles C.W. Cooke reflects<\/a> that MSNBC\u2019s Dean Obeidallah has declared \u201cFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis is \u2018more dangerous than Trump.\u2019\u200a \u201d For all the claims that Donald Trump was uniquely evil, such assertions were \u201cinevitable from the moment Trump lost the 2020 presidential election.\u201d Indeed, voters have heard \u201cthe same scary things about almost every Republican candidate since Eisenhower.\u201d And no matter that Trump and DeSantis \u201ccould scarcely be less alike if they tried.\u201d The nonsense charge is just \u201ca signal that the focus of American politics has shifted,\u201d and it\u2019s time \u201cfor a swapp<\/a>ing out of the villains.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: The Zero-COVID Delusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe notion that we could literally stop the spread of COVID by locking down and vaccinating it out of existence was always a fantasy,\u201d observes Kat Rosenfield at Spectator World<\/a>: Smallpox is the only human disease ever eradicated. \u201cEvery other virus, from Ebola to influenza to the \u00adbubonic plague, still exists among us; we\u2019ve just learned to live with them and to control them as best we can.\u201d But \u201call those months of being told to mask up, stay home and keep our distance have instilled in a fearful population the seductive illusion of control. .\u2009.\u2009. Suddenly, the only moral position is to do everything within your power to avoid illness, no matter how extreme.\u201d Worse: \u201cThe flip-side\u201d of the zero-COVID delusion is \u201cthe specter of the noncompliant villain who\u2019s keeping us from getting there. Those who dissent .\u2009.\u2009. are \u2018literally killing\u2019 people.\u201d This is \u201cinjecting a toxic, corrosive element into the heart of the social<\/a> contract.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Yes, COVID Is 99 Percent Survivable<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cA viral post\u201d claiming COVID is 99 percent survivable for most age groups is \u201clikely true,\u201d notes Robby Soave at Reason<\/a>, yet social media flagged it as \u201cmisinformation,\u201d and PolitiFact rated it \u201cfalse.\u201d In fact, \u201cexpert consensus\u201d places \u201cthe death rate at below 1 percent\u201d for most people. The post erred in comparing the vaccine\u2019s efficacy rate, 94 percent, to the COVID survivability rate; vaccines don\u2019t compete with natural immunity but \u201crender COVID-19 even more mild and even more survivable.\u201d Yet PolitiFact rated as false the very idea that COVID has a low \u00adinfection fatality rate for most people. People can and should \u201cimprove their odds\u201d by getting vaccinated \u2014 but \u201cwe don\u2019t need to live in fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Defund Police Means Feudalism<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the law breaks down, and anarchy and violence reign, only the wealthy, powerful and corrupt thrive,\u201d declares Jarrett Stepman at The National Interest<\/a>. Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) inadvertently underscored this reality in a recent interview explaining why she needed $70,000 in private security \u2014 even as she championed #DefundPolice. \u201cBush has every right to defend herself if she feels threatened, but don\u2019t regular people have that right, too? What about those who aren\u2019t members of Congress and can\u2019t go around with an armed detail of private security?\u201d Defunding police \u201cwon\u2019t further social justice\u201d; it\u2019ll produce \u201ca kind of neo-feudalism, where the rich and powerful can evade its consequences while everyone else suffers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Iran Nukes Hopes of a Deal<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week, The Wall Street Journal\u2019s Walter Russell Mead finds<\/a>, \u201cthe optimistic case for restoring the 2015 Iran nuclear deal died. Like so many other innocents, it died at the hands of Ebrahim Raisi, the hanging judge handpicked by Iran\u2019s supreme leader\u201d to face off against President Biden as Iran\u2019s new president. Optimists believed the deal would create a \u201cnonnuclear Iran\u201d that \u201cwould become a stable, democratic force in the Middle East.\u201d But \u201cSupreme Leader Ali Khamenei has no intention of ending up like Mikhail Gorbachev. By ruthlessly engineering the election of a hard-liner\u2019s hard-liner,\u201d the ayatollah \u201cslammed the door on normalization and nailed it shut.\u201d Khamenei knows a new deal \u201chas zero chance of attracting the two-thirds majority of senators necessary for treaty ratification\u201d; the most Tehran can hope for \u201cis a Biden pinky-swear.\u201d Why \u201cpay any kind of price\u201d for that?<\/p>\n
