GENEVA, Aug 10 \u2013 After spending hundreds of hours in virtual meetings to complete this week\u2019s major\u00a0UN\u00a0climate\u00a0report,\u00a0scientists\u00a0Piers Forster and Joeri Rogelj celebrated in a way their peers could not: by hugging.<\/p>\n

Britain-based Forster had been weary of the isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and invited his co-author to work alongside him in his Harrogate kitchen as they worked with other\u00a0scientists\u00a0around the world to thrash out the final version of the\u00a0report\u00a0by the Intergovernmental Panel on\u00a0Climate\u00a0Change.<\/a><\/p>\n

Being together for the last stretch of a three-year effort \u201cmade it more fun,\u201d said Forster, a\u00a0climate\u00a0physicist at the University of Leeds.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy neighbors must have thought us mad though, hearing \u201cThank you madam co-chair,\u201d in response to questions from St Kitts, India, or the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, coming through at 4 am.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the more than 700\u00a0scientists\u00a0and government delegates finally app<\/a>roved the last part of their 3,949-page\u00a0report\u00a0over the weekend, they all erupted into cheers \u2013 each separated in their own little frame, except for Forster and Rogelj.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s landmark\u00a0report<\/a>, warning that the world is dangerously speeding toward runaway\u00a0climate\u00a0change, took years of painstaking effort to pull together.<\/p>\n

Specialist\u00a0scientists, all 234 of them working for free, reviewed more than 14,000 scientific studies published since 2013 to draft the latest version of what has now become the established science<\/a> on\u00a0climate\u00a0change, before coming together \u2013 virtually \u2013 for two weeks of final checks and negotiations.<\/p>\n

Despite travel<\/a> restrictions and national lockdowns that delayed the\u00a0report\u2019s completion for several months, organizers say they pulled off the effort with no notable technical glitches to meet their revised deadline.<\/p>\n

For many of the\u00a0scientists, the effort came with a personal cost. \u201cYou put a lot of yourself in it,\u201d said ETH Zurich\u00a0climate\u00a0scientist Sonia Seneviratne, who had to skip a family holiday to help finish the\u00a0report.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0scientists\u00a0praised the inclusion of colleagues from 65 countries across the globe, some said the resulting time-zone challenges were bad for their sleep.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could not find any time slot that wasn\u2019t two o\u2019clock in the morning for somebody,\u201d said Michael Wehner, a\u00a0climate\u00a0scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. \u201cI\u2019m a night owl, but I\u2019m not that much of one,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n

Completing the politically sensitive \u201cSummary for Policymakers\u201d section, which 195 governments must approve by consensus, presented a particular challenge. Each word of each sentence needed to be scrutinized and debated.<\/p>\n

To help the effort, organizers displayed each sentence in yellow on a shared screen until it was approved, at which point it appeared in green. If it was rejected, it turned blue \u2013 signaling a revision was needed. Disputes then had to be resolved in virtual breakout sessions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe spent sometimes hours on a footnote,\u201d said co-chair Valerie Masson-Delmotte, a\u00a0climate\u00a0scientist at the University of Paris-Saclay who described work on the\u00a0report\u00a0as a \u201cmarathon.\u201d<\/p>\n

One scientist in India even called by phone to attend a meeting while a tropical cyclone wailed outside his window, having already cut off his electricity and internet, she recalled.<\/p>\n

But Masson-Delmotte also said the chance to work on pioneering\u00a0climate\u00a0research with so many\u00a0scientists\u00a0around the world was \u201cone of the biggest\u00a0joys of my professional life.\u201d<\/p>\n

She took strolls in a park among flowers to relax between sessions.<\/p>\n

Others said they bonded while getting to know each other\u2019s pets and kids, who frequently popped up in the background during video calls.<\/p>\n

But for some, the loneliness at times was grinding. Rogelj, a\u00a0climate\u00a0scientist at Imperial College London, said it was helpful to be able to work alongside Forster over the last two weeks \u2013 just to exchange ideas, or to vent.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can do everything that makes us human, that you can\u2019t do through a screen,\u201d he told Reuters. \u201cIf I would have been alone in my room, it would have been much harder to achieve this.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
